Bike commuting – what’s not to like? Forget sitting in traffic at peak hour. Stop spending huge chunks of your pay check on fuel. And help relieve some of the pressure that the automotive industry places on our environment. Jump in the saddle and get pedalling!  But before you do, there’s a few things we reckon you should know. Here’s our top 4 tips for a safe and smooth cycle commute.

Be seen

It’s important to be as visible as you possibly can. Bright, reflective clothing; a brightly coloured backpack; a bike light – you’ve got plenty of opportunities to stand out, and doing so will help traffic spot you so that they can proceed with caution.

Be Predictable

You’re on a bike – you don’t have the benefit of indicators or brake lights. Be as predictable as you can with your movements on the road. Even though you’re not in a car, the road rules still apply to you. Stop at red lights, indicate before turning by raising an arm – give drivers every opportunity to see you, acknowledge what your next move is going to be, and act accordingly.

Stay in your lane

The network of bike lanes across most cities is always expanding. Even if it takes a little bit longer to get where you’re going, follow a bike-friendly route. Bike lanes are removed from the flow of traffic, and help you to steer clear of the chaos of congested main roads.

Find the right gear

Obviously the type of kit you’ll need will depend on the climate you’re riding in. But it’s always a good idea to carry a lightweight waterproof shell in your pack. If you’re lucky enough to have a shower at your workplace, then moisture management won’t be a big issue. If you don’t have access to a shower, take a fresh shirt, and ride in something light and highly breathable to minimise sweat.
