Barley Rava Idli

Description : Barley Rava Idli is a healthy breakfast/dinner recipe which doesn’t require any fermentation. It is an instant recipe except for the soaking time required for barley. To make this Idli more colourful, you can add finely chopped veggies like carrot, beans, beetroot and others to the idli batter. It not only changes the looks of Idli, but also makes it more nutritious.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup semolina / rava
  • 1/2 cup barley
  • 1/2 cup curd
  • 1 teaspoon fruit salt
  • 2 finely chopped green chilies
  • 1/4 cup water or more if needed
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal

Directions for Barley Rava Idli Recipe

  1. To begin making Barley Rava Idli recipe, soak barley in enough water overnight.
  2. Next day, drain the water completely and grind barley to a smooth paste adding a little water. Once it is done, transfer it to a bowl.
  3. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a Kadai and add mustard seeds, urad dal and Chana dal.
  4. Add chopped chilies and sauté it for a while. Add semolina in the same pan and roast it for 1-2 minutes.
  5. After 1-2 minutes, switch off the flame and add this mixture to the ground barley paste.
  6. Add curd in a different bowl and whisk it properly. Add 1/4 cup water and whisk it again.
  7. Once it is done, add the curd to the rava-barley mixture. Add salt according to your taste and mix everything well.
  8. To prepare idli, fill idli cooker/steamer with required level of water. Once it starts boiling, grease idli plates with a little oil.
  9. Now, take the idli batter and add 1 teaspoon fruit salt in it. Mix everything well. Now, add 1 or 2 tablespoon of idli batter in each cups of idli plate and cook it for about 10 minutes.
  10. Serve Barley Rava Idli with South Indian Coconut chutney or Dhaniya Pudina chutney.
