2 Ways to install Android N (Nutella) Developer Preview in Your Device

Android N Developer Preview is the latest version of Android offered by Google, the first was Android L (Lollipop) in 2014, Android M (Marshmallow) in 2015. If you're one of the lucky few with a Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, 9, Nexus Player or Pixel C, here's how to install Android N (Nut Telling) developer preview. 


Here is a step by step guide to install Android N Developer Preview on your device.


How to Unlock Android Device

To get started, you'll need to have your device unlocked. Go to the Settings app and head to the "Developer options" and make sure that "OEM unlocking" is checked.

Next, Use the command “adb reboot bootloader” to go to the device’s bootloader and check if your device is in the locked state. If the bootloader on your Nexus device is locked, make sure your device is at the bootloader screen and use the “fastboot oem unlock” command. After this, you should see some prompts on your device to confirm that you do indeed want to unlock your bootloader. After you confirm this, your device is going to be completely wiped and you’ll be ready to move on with this guide.


How to Install Android N Developer Preview via factory image

Before proceedig download and install the latest Android Studio Preview on your system. With Android Studio Preview, the ADB and Fastboot programmes are also installed which can be accessed through the command terminal on your PC.

#1. Download the correct factory image for your device from here, extract the images and save on your computer. 

#2. Go to Settings > Developer options > check USB debugging. Connect your device to your computer over USB and start the device in fastboot mode.

Note : You may be required to boot into fastboot mode using the ADB tool: With the device powered on, go to the command terminal and execute the following: adb reboot bootloader. This will give access to device's bootloader.


#3. Navigate to the unzipped system image directory. Execute "Flash-all.bat", which should unzipped image files and install the necessary bootloader, baseband firmware and operating system. This will take time and will see several reboots, the step will install Android N Developer Preview on device. 


How to Install Android N Developer Preview via OTA update
 
#1. Visit http://g.co/androidbeta on your desktop or mobile browser and Sign into your Google account associated with an eligible device (Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C, and General Mobile 4G).


#2. Select your device and click on Agree to the terms and conditions to join Beta. A system update will be offered to your device. User can check to see if an update is pending by navigating to Settings > About > System updates.

If you install Android N Developer Preview in your device, you might face the some problems. Google talks about general issues like degraded performance, battery life regressions and compatibility issues with some apps. Here are specific issues listed by Google.
  • Voicemail playback does not work.
  • Settings controls and toggles may be slow or appear to be unresponsive.
  • In the Gmail app, direct archiving of emails included in a notification bundle does not work properly.
  • Bluetooth pairing between keyboards and Android devices may be unstable.
  • Video playback may lag and show interruptions.
  • NFC doesn’t function until first unlock.
  • Under some circumstances, the default ringtone may not sound for phone calls and messages.
  • Apps may experience crashes and unexpected UI behavior when put into split-screen mode. These are app issues that must be fixed by the app developer.
  • When an app targets a version of the Android platform earlier than N, the App may not work with split-screen toast may appear multiple times.
  • Apps may flicker while resizing.

 If you don't like Android N developer preview, getting your phone back to the latest public version of Android is really easy. You just need to go to the Android Beta Program page and about halfway down the page you should see which of your Nexus devices were opted in to the program.

Just to the right of a photo of your device model, there is a green button that "unenroll device". Once you've clicked that, you'll also want to confirm that you're unenrolling your phone or tablet. You'll get an OTA (over the air) update in just a few minute, which will revert you back to the latest public version of Android.
