Over 235,000 nurses work in Saudi Arabia, a 23% increase in just 7 years

On the occasion of International Nurses Day, which was observed on May 12, the Ministry of Health released a report indicating that the overall count of male and female nurses experienced a growth of over 23% between the Years 2016 and 2023.

- In the Saudi health sector, there are 235,461 registered and categorized nurses overall in the year 2023. In 2018, the Ministry of Health released a report indicating that there were 184,565 registered nurses, with 70,319 of them being Saudi nationals. About 70% of nurses worldwide are foreigners, primarily from Malaysia, the Philippines, and India.

- As per the most recent statistics, the Ministry of Health employs around 106,000 nurses, although the number of nurses in other government organizations is estimated to be around 15,000. The number of male and female nurses in the private sector has increased by 67,000, making 235,461 total in the health sector. There are 14 universities in Saudi Arabia that have nursing departments. - As one of the programs under Saudi Vision 2030 that support health personnel in the Kingdom to improve the provision of high-quality health services, the ministry is putting the strategy to support the nursing profession into action in collaboration with the appropriate government agencies.

- The nursing profession has benefited from this program's support and empowerment as a humanitarian career. It also achieves the goals set forth in the Health Sector Transformation Program.

The government's significant interest in the professional and human aspects of nursing, with a focus on the sublime values of passion, empathy, and competency, is seen in the rise in the number of male and female nurses working in the Kingdom's health sector. - Additionally, the government works nonstop to raise the standard of healthcare provided, the proficiency of the medical personnel, and the importance of nursing in giving patients in different hospitals and medical facilities with high-quality, compassionate care.
