Which Learning Style do you use the most

The capacity of learning differs from person to person based on the methodology of learning he chooses and the learning styles being employed. Understanding of these learning methods and learning styles are necessary to improve the effectiveness of learning. Learning styles and methods are standard techniques which people use to learn. Every person is not associated with one learning style. In reality, you may be using multiple learning styles based on what is being learned. By going through this list, you can check out how proficiency you are in using these learning methods and improve them.

This learning methodology diagram is derived from the Cone of Experience developed by Edgar Dale, an audiovisual education expert in his book Audio-Visual Methods in Teaching, 1946 in which he discussed various ways of imparting information. His actual diagram did not have any reference to the word, learning. It represented the level of abstraction, denoting words at the top and real life experiences at the bottom. Others attached the percentages to each item in the cone of learning. This cone of learning became popular in educationalists and academicians because intuitively everyone feels that it is right. Methods of Learning

Part method:

Reading one or couple of sentences much time till they have been fully understood. The process of completing the entire passage by reading and re-reading it part by part is called as a part learning method. The whole passage is divided into small parts, and each part is learned separately.

Whole Method:

Reading the entire passage repeatedly till you understand the entire passage. This method is found to be better than the part method as it requires less time and less effort to learn the whole passage.

Passive Learning:

This is somewhat similar to the Whole method where the entire passage is read many numbers of times till you understand the entire passage.

Active Learning:

After reading one passage, recite from memory what was read as much as possible. After reciting, look at the passage and see how much you can recite correctly and where mistakes are made. Learning by the method of recitation is called as active learning. Researchers have proved that testing yourself on the subject is more effective than re-reading the passage again and again.

Spaced Learning:

This learning technique is based on the spacing effect. It states that studying reading passage over multiple periods of time is effective compared to reading the passage repeatedly in one sitting. Taking short rest after some practicing it for sometimes. This method of taking short breaks helps in refreshing the brain. This approach is called spaced learning as there is space interval while studying.

Massed Learning:

If one goes on practicing until he learns the task without taking any rest in between. The spaced learning method has proved to be better than this massed learning method.

The recommendation by education psychologists after extensive research is to employ spaced and active learning using the part method. There are three predominant learners such as analyzers, observers and Doers who use one or many of the learning styles described below.

Seven Learning Styles

  1. Visual: Visual learners learn efficiently using their eyes either by seeing or by visualizing. Their efficiency increases when pictures, animation and videos are employed during the learning process. These people are more creative and talk faster. The words they use evoke visual images to the listener. These people are called as observers.
  2. Auditory: Auditory learners learn efficiently using their ears. They think in a linear manner and are good listeners. These people are called as observers.
  3. Verbal: Learn by using words by employing reading, writing and speaking. They are interested in learning new words and improving their vocabulary. They are interested in knowing facts and ideas expressed by words and numbers.
  4. Kinesthetic: They like to use their body and perform actions to learn. They learn through trial and error method and are slow in talking as well as in taking decisions. These people are called as doers.
  5. Logical: The people who learn by thinking and reasoning to understand concepts. They want to know the underlying reasons behind the learning and have the ability to get the big picture of what they learn. They can solve problems efficiently and have high IQ. They are called as Analyzers.
  6. Social: People who enjoy learning along with other people. They are interested in group study and are more interested to know different people’s perception of the subject.
  7. Solitary: Self-study. Individuals who prefer to learn alone without any help.
