What is the purpose of the function keys

Here the explanation to the function keys of your keyboard

The vast majority of users of computers do not know the functionality of the top of your keyboard commands. The most famous key is the F5, which is used to force the update of some website, but what about the other?

The function keys (from F1 to F12) correspond to 12 “shortcuts” that aim to speed up what you want to do in certain programs and browsers.

On some keyboards, these keys also perform some special function depending on the icon printed on them. For example, if a speaker appears, it adjusts the volume.

In macOS, Apple’s operating system, and laptops of some brands you have to press the Fn key (usually located in the lower left corner of the keyboard) at the same time as the one of the chosen function. For example, pressing Fn and F10 (speaker icon) performs the function assigned to the F10 key instead of activating or deactivating the mute mode. Other options are to increase or decrease the brightness of the screen, the option to suspend or lock the keyboard, among others.

If you prefer that the behavior of the upper row keys always be that of the standard function keys without having to press the Fn key, you can determine it in the System Settings menu.
Here is a brief description of the default functions for each of the keys.

F1: Open a help window in the program or application that is currently open.

F2: Selecting a file will give you the option to rename the folder or file.

F3: Open the search menu from any part of the computer.

F4: When combined with the ALT key, the page or program is closed.

F5: Serves to refresh the screen; especially useful when surfing the internet.

F6: Sends directly on the URL in the browser and allows writing on top of it quickly.

F7: In Word it is used to open a window that checks the spelling and the grammar.

F8: Selects text in Word and opens Safe Mode. For the latter you have to keep it pressed when you turn on the computer.

F9: Update a document in Word, open the option to send or receive mails in Outlook, to recalculate formulas in Excel and to open a presentation in Corel Draw.

F10: Used to access the navigation bar. When combined with the Shift key, it displays the same popup window that appears when you right-click.

F11: Makes the browser window look full screen. In Word it helps to find the hyperlinks entered in the text and Excel allows you to insert graphics.

F12: Opens the document that is being viewed on the internet in HTML mode, while in Word and Excel it is used to access the “Save as” function. Allows you to recalculate formulas in Excel and open a presentation in Corel Draw. F11: Makes the browser window look full screen. In Word it helps to find the hyperlinks entered in the text and Excel allows you to insert graphics. F12: Opens the document that is being viewed on the internet in HTML mode, while in Word and Excel it is used to access the “Save as” function. F11: Makes the browser window look full screen. In Word it helps to find the hyperlinks entered in the text and Excel allows you to insert graphics. F12: Opens the document that is being viewed on the internet in HTML mode, while in Word and Excel it is used to access the “Save as” function.
