The Coily Tool is a 100% British designed coil accessory, developed by a chap right here in the UK called Simon, who is based in North Yorkshire. 

What is the Coily Tool I hear you ask? It’s a very simple innovative coil trimming accessory, that takes the hassle out of trimming your coil leads to the right size, I will guarantee once you have a Coily in your possession you will wonder how you ever lived without it!

Let’s go and take a look at this wonderful little tool, and I’ll try and explain in my ham fisted warbling way why I think the Coily is the next best thing to a full English breakfast.

Design and Build Quality

The Coily Tool was sent to me in a plain box wrapped in a bubble wrap envelope with a chocolate bar, obviously to bring my sugar levels back up after the excitement I had at receiving this innovative little tool LOL.

The design and quality of the tool is exemplary! Did I mention that the Coily is 100% British designed and developed? I did OK then LOL.

I was sent both versions (3d and injection). If you take the colour out of the equation, being very honest it is hard to tell them apart just by looking at them, the 3d printed version however is lighter in weight than the injection version.

At the top on both versions you have “COILY” and a hole for your wrist strap.Down one side you have measurements moving from 3.0mm to 8.0mm and tabs for measuring your posts, the front of the Coily has a series of holes to poke your coil legs through.Flipping the Coily onto its side you will see that the tool is sloped from the 3.0mm to its largest point of 8.0mm.

A Basic Guide to Using the Coily Tool

It’s not often that I get over enthusiastic about a simple little tool that I rave to point of lunacy about it, let alone write a full article about one! But in my opinion the Coily Tool is worth it.

The basic concept of the Coily Tool is simplicity itself, which is good because for me the more simplistic something is the better I like it LOL.

Let’s put a simple build in my Apocalypse 2^nd generation RDA which is a 2 post clamp style deck with 24g Kanthal dual 4mm diameter and 6 wraps.

After wrapping your coils you will need to find out your post thickness, do this by using the side tabs on the side of your Coily place a tab space over the post, the Apocalypse measures 4.0mm.To give yourself wiggle room I suggest moving up 1 or 2 places or the leads will be too short and you’ll end up with the coil to close to the post, I’m going to choose to cut the wire at 4.5mm.

Take your coil and find the 4.5mm holes on the reverse side of the Coily; I like to make sure my legs are straight at this point, then push them through the 5.0mm holes so your coil is against the back side of the Coily deck and cut the leads flush to the front side of Coily deck. Snip those coils.

Place the coils into your RDA as normal, move into position heat and strum, done, all you need now is vape cotton and e-liquid. Example 2

The next example I’ll coil up my Gemz Axis RTA with a single pre made Tiger coil, the same principle applies, only this time because I need to have the coil leads facing different directions I will have to cut the legs 1 at a time, this time I will cut the tails at 5.0mm as the Axis posts measure 4.5mm. Snip.Pop on your deck.

Example 3

My last example is the velocity style deck of the VGod Pro Drip RDA whose posts are 4.0mm I cut the coils at 4.5mm; velocity decks for me are by far the easiest to build upon with or without the Coily, with the Coily it takes no time at all to place the coils, just slip the leads in and screw down done.

Post less decks

Because I haven’t got many post less decks I will be honest and say I have no idea how deep the slots are on various decks, but let’s take the Vandy Vape Mesh RDA.

I have found by trial and error that if I cut the leads to my conventional coils at 4.5mm the coil sits just fine without touching the bottom of the deck.

While the Coily is an excellent little tool, you are not going to want to make use it all the time, I find especially for very small decks it is easier to just do things the way I always have!

RDA’s like my little Derringer v1 by Praxis or the Indestructible by Wismec being two.

On the Coily website Simon has introduced a fabulous little database that users have noted down specific RDA/RTA/RDTA/RBA posts and lead measurements, thereby taking measurements out of the equation and making Coily even easier to use! The database is growing everyday and already has many various measurements for different rebuild able decks. You need to register on their site to see and submit your measurements. Benefits of using the Coily

Some of the more experienced builders I have spoken to about the Coily can’t seem to get their heads around the use and idea and wave it off as a beginner’s tool.

Not so folks, this little tool is fast becoming an invaluable and essential part of my build kit.

For people like myself who have been building my own coils for many years, but now suffer from arthritis or other disabilities such as nearsightedness, using the Coily to pre cut the leads takes out a lot of stress and makes building enjoyable again without pain, stress or squinting LOL.

I don’t know about you but a couple of things about building really frustrate me.

1. Flying little pieces of wire that land on the carpet, if you’re not wearing shoes and tread on one of these it can really hurt and in some cases pierce the skin! Not good if you have small children or animals around! Thankfully a side benefit of the Coily is no more flying wire, as you can comfortably hold the wire as you cut it.
2. Normal practice when building is to slip your coils in tighten down and clip your wire only to find out that the wire you want to cut is too close to the lead of your other coil or pushed through your other coil. If you aren’t careful you will snip the lead or damage the coil you already have in, its happened to me many times! If you have a truly stubborn build deck that you have to eyeball to clip your leg lengths 9 time out of 10 you have to go back and re clip once your coil is situated because you misjudged slightly! Coily allows you to cut your leads precisely without any learning curve, for me it is invaluable Tool!

Another side benefit of the Coily Tool – the other day I was looking around for my ruler I couldn’t find it so I used the flat side of the Coily LOL.

I have heard tell that someone on the Facebook Groups is using his Coily inside his Coil master kit leaving the wrist strap outside as a convenient handle for carrying, I haven’t tried that yet but it’s worth a thought LOL.

Final Review Verdict

LOL… OK, looking back over this review I have gushed rather a lot about the Coily Tool, there really isn’t a lot more I can add about this fabulous little tool other than Simon has created, from my point of view, an indispensable, innovative, user friendly bit of kit that every builder or potential builder should think about for their tool bag!

I am astounded that no one else has come up with a tool like this before now kudos to Simon.

Would I buy the Coily Tool again should mine get damaged lost or stolen? To right I would I can’t believe I’ve gotten along without it before now.
