Naming your blog can seem like an impossible task. It can seem like there are a million options and yet so few at the same time. And, then you need to determine if any sound good or resonate. The trick to coming up with a good blog name is all in the process.

Here’s what I suggest…

Step One: Remove All Boundaries and Brainstorm.

Often people become trapped in what they think they should name their blog. They limit themselves with definitions, beliefs about what makes a good blog name and, quite honestly, by thinking that their blog name is the key to profitability.

Let go of all of those perceptions and simply allow yourself to brainstorm!

Be sure to limit your brainstorming time, though. This will result in maximum results and the time limit will also help you eliminate preconceived notions about what a name should be.

Make a list of your ideas either by writing them down or, if your creativity flows better when you speak, then simply record them with a digital recording device. You could even call yourself on the phone and leave a long voicemail of ideas.

Step Two: Do A Little Keyword Research.

Finding which Keywords are popular and used often in search phrases on Google and Yahoo can go a long way in helping you find the best name for your blog.  In order for readers to find your blog online, it helps to have common search words in your blog name. There are wonderful, and yes some of them are free, Keyword tools available online.

Here are two:

• WordTracker is a very good tool for researching keywords. If you can’t afford to get a paid membership there (even for a day), they have a very good free keyword tool at http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com.
• Google has their own keyword tool, but they don’t show you numbers. They only give you a general idea of the searches a keyword gets, as indicated by a colored bar: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.

Write down the keywords and keyword phrases which are commonly used and fit your blog’s niche and topics.

Step Three: Take A Combined Look At Your Brainstorm List + Your Keyword Research.

Ideally you’ll be able to create a memorable and unique combination that both represents what your blog is about but also incorporates a few keywords. That being said, sometimes a name strikes you as memorable and unique and, try as you might, there are just no keywords that fit.  It’s okay – relax! Go with your gut. If you’re really uncertain, consider taking a quick poll amongst friends, family and associates and ask them to choose between a few.

Naming your blog is a big decision however with a little bit of broad thinking, some targeted research and a little optimism you will find the perfect name for your business.

Step Four: Try To Choose A Name That Can Also Be Your Domain

To help your readers remember your blog and where to find you online, it’s really important to try to find a Domain that matches your blog name.  For example – here at Blogelina (our blog name), our domain is Blogelina.com.

If at all possible, try to get the .com of your domain, too.  It’s what people remember the most – like amazon.com, google.com, facebook.com.  If you absolutely LOVE your blog name and can’t get the .com, go for the .net next.

Step Five: Still Stuck?

I love, love, love the namemesh.com site!  I’ve used it SO many times to get inspiration for blog names.  You simply type in a few words related to your blog topic and it puts together combinations of domain names that are available.  You even get suggestions for other word combinations that might work!  Best part?  It’s totally free to use as many times as you want!

Step Six: Do NOT Let Finding The Perfect Blog Name Hold You Back!

Maybe you’ve completed all the steps above and you STILL haven’t found the perfect name for your blog.  What I absolutely do NOT want to see happen is you to give up on the whole blogging thing because you couldn’t figure out the perfect blog name.

Don’t. Let. That. Happen.

You aren’t stuck with the domain that you choose forever!

You can move your blog to a new domain in the future if that’s something you feel needs to be done!

It’s a bit of a process to make the move but – It. Can. Be. Done.

So, pick your favorite blog name idea for now – and then, Start Your Blog!

If you don’t step out and get started – you just never know what your future might be missing.
