There is a discovery made by a farmer from Scotland that might change our notion of history to some extent. When we speak of civilization and history of mankind, we envisage wonders like the Mayan Temples and the colossal Egyptian monuments and pyramids. On the island of Orkney in 1850, a Scottish farmer dug into something that had been hidden for millennia when he moved aside a simple rock.
First Discovered Because Of It’s Out Of Date Structure
This pristine settlement was discovered in 1850 when a great storm battered the bay and blew away the sand to reveal a glimpse of what lay beneath the ground. The farmer had been going about his daily routine and was curious enough to go investigate the odd-looking monument which even then in the 1850s did not look contemporary enough.
Multiple Excavations And Research Were Done At The Site
In 1868, William Watt of Skaill, the local laird, after uncovering just four of the ancient home, abandoned his project. The settlement remained undisturbed until 1925 when another storm damaged some of the previously excavated structures. further excavations followed and, between 1928 and 1930, the dwellings we see today were released from their protective cocoons. Radiocarbon dating in the early 1970s confirmed that the settlement dated from the late Neolithic — inhabited for around 600 years, between 3200BC and 2200BC.
Waves Of Shock and Surprise
Prima Facie, what he saw seemed too outlandish to be true. A plethora of questions must have crossed his mind like ‘How is this built? Who built these? And for what purpose?’ He did not quite believe that they would actually be a genuine man-made space. It was truly awing to witness in the first place. But unknowingly, he had discovered a blast from the past.
A Hidden City Is Discovered
Yet the reality was undeniable: there really was a city that had been hiding for thousands of years. His discovery was so mind baffling that he had to re-check and actually explore the site. Surely this must have been a dwelling place for people in the ancient times, however, they now seem to be history.
The Curious Case Of Skara Brae
Experts believe that the settlement, named Skara Brae, began 5,000 years ago on this very place. This site resembles something out of Hollywood movies: the likes of The Lord Of The Rings or Harry Potter perhaps. It was hard to imagine that there were residents here, actual human people, who had lit up this hidden city with their presence.
5000 Year Old
Since this place was in fact built sometime, say, 5000 years ago, it would make it even older than the Egyptian pyramids! Even the Egyptian pyramids have become such a curious study for researchers and historians all around. This newly found discovery would be no less than all of these. Like who can forget the still unsolved murder mystery of King Tutankhamen from Egypt. No one knows, what secret this place holds in.
In A Decent Condition Still
The city remains intact because it was engulfed in sand dunes. Looking at all the items across the settlement and taking into consideration that the site has been standing unattended for so many years, it is hard to believe that it’s the condition is quite a spic and span. With few refurbishments, the place can again be liveable.
One Of Great Britain’s Ancient Settlements
Researchers say that it is one of Great Britain’s most ancient permanent settlements. The slates and rocks used are still in very good condition. It is clear that the construction was handled carefully and with great efficiency. primafacie, some could even argue that it still looks better than most homes now!
A Home For 50 To 100 People
It is said that somewhere between 50 and 100 people once called Skara Brae home. Since the area covered by this place is not so vast, the community or rather, family, that dwelled here were probably thoroughly close to one another. They basically shared one huge home like a joint family. It happened to be their forte.
Only Eight Remaining Homes
But there are only eight remaining houses today. Since Scotland is known to be of the colder regions, there are multiple items that clearly resemble a fireplace. The people that stayed here would have had such an intimate lifestyle and must have shared a great bonding and decent level of understanding with one another based on how the houses are built.
Interconnected With One Common Tunnel
There were myriad massive doors made of stone that could separate each house, but they were all intertwined through a large system of tunnels. Imagine living in a home that was interconnected by one tunnel with all of your neighbors and entering into one’s privacy whenever felt relevant. Its no secret most people nowadays would prefer otherwise.
A Master Bed Inside
There were a number of bedding areas in each hut, including, in most cases, a far bigger one that was most likely used by the heads of each home. This would more or less equate to the modern day master bedrooms that include the king-sized beds perhaps. A sensational master bed exudes that these people were spectacular in their way of living.
Houses Kept Fish In Storage Bins
Each hut apparently kept live fish in a waterproof storage bin. That may have been their primary source of food. The dwelling sits nearby the sea so there is no surprise in this practice of keeping fish in the household for digestive purpose. One can wonder if catching a fish live would be their favorite past time.
An Unidentified Artifact
This strange artifact was found at Skara Brae. From the looks of it, one could presume that it is a kitchen tool that is used to crush vegetables or nuts maybe to make a paste. However, the intricate details of this item look to furnished to actually be just a cooking tool. This artifact indicates that the people of this civilization were a creative lot and were immensely skillful.
Nicknamed ‘the Scottish Pompeii’
It’s been so well-preserved that some have monikered Skara Brae “the Scottish Pompeii.” Yes, Pompeii is in fact, way larger than this place but they do have a lot of similarities because they are both abandoned the place of residence that was built thousands of years ago.

As much as researchers have discovered about Skara Brae, there are more questions raised about this place than answers. It’s like the more you dig in, the more you will face the bewilderedness. We may never know exactly what happened here. If you ever come across someone that claims that there is nothing new to discover under the sun, school them about the Icelandic island of Surtsey. Before 1963, it was non-existent. It was only after an underwater volcano at the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) erupted and settled when down in 1967, cause the remnants to form an island where no island had been before. It is now a house to various plant species, birds, marine animals, etc.
Moeraki Boulders, New Zealand
These are random spherical boulders roughly measuring 12 feet scattered on Koekohe Beach on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Here on these ancient sea floors, they have formed millions of years ago, experts say, collecting and hardening sediment and minerals around a core such as a fossil or a shell resembling the way oysters are formed. How they originated and the cause for their cracking is still under study and no one has a conclusive answer yet. But the local Maori legends stated that the boulders are the remains of eel baskets, calabashes, and kumara.

Eternal Flame Falls, Orchard Park, New York
Look behind this waterfall in the Shale Creek Preserve section of Chestnut Ridge Park in suburban Buffalo, New York, and you may find what looks to be a flicker of light, maybe a candle burning or a lamp perhaps. It even gives off an aroma and is actually fueled by what geologists call a macroseep of natural gas from the Earth below. The flames occasionally die out because of the water flowing but get lit up again by hiker every other time. A perfect place to visit and witness the Fire in the water.
