How to adapt to working from home

In these unprecedented times, we are all having to Adapt how we live our lives and work. As many of us are now working from home, we thought we would share some tips on how to adapt and optimise your home working environment.

Setting up a workstation
The most crucial thing is Setting up an appropriate area to work when you aren’t used to working from home for long periods. Where possible you should try to sit at a table with an appropriate chair to maintain good posture to prevent any back, neck and wrist issues.
You should work in an area where you have natural light if possible but not have direct light on your screen. It is also good if you can find a quiet space away from others and any distractions.
Trying to meet all these criteria can be hard when you haven’t had the chance to plan for it and can’t purchase anything to assist, so just do the best you can.

Staying focused
Maintaining your focus whilst working from home can be difficult, especially if you have other people in the house with you, so try to work away from others where possible. Avoid distractions were possible and turn off the tv or radio, as well as trying to ignore the weather and mounting housework! It is so easy to get distracted, so planning is essential.

Setting yourself a realistic plan is the key to your success so that you can prioritise your work and set yourself targets. But you may also need to plan out your work alongside childcare with your partner so it’s important to talk through the pressures and deadlines you have and work together to plan out the days giving each of you time to focus on work and to home school or entertain your children.

Staying connected
Although you are working remotely on your own it is important to stay connected with your Colleagues, not only to work effectively together but to also maintain your sanity. There is a whole range of collaboration tools available to support businesses and many are offering free or reduced rates for the next few months or the rest of the year.

Using video calls for meetings or discussions is a great way of seeing your colleagues and will help you to not feel too alone. There are chat functions that can allow you to see when colleagues are online so that you can ask them questions as you would if you were in the office. Some managers have even set up video calls as virtual break times where staff can have coffee and chat in a relaxed way as they might over the water cooler or kettle.

Whatever your circumstances are we hope that this blog finds you well and that it has helped you to adapt to your new ways of working.
