“pal.imp.sest/Unseen Seen | Artists Michael Campagna and Tucker Stilley Launch SPARC’s New Gallery Space

The public is invited to the official opening of the South Pasadena Arts Council’s (SPARC) permanent headquarters, gallery, and event space at the Fremont Centre in South Pasadena on May 18, 2024. An opening reception for “pal.imp.sest/Unseen Seen,” featuring artists Michael Campagna and the late Tucker Stilley, will be held in SPARC’s new gallery space from 3 to 6 p.m., preceded at 2:30 p.m. by a ribbon-cutting ceremony conducted by the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.

Campagna’s digital and hand-drawn explorations of reflections and refractions are inspired by his desire “to respond to unseen phenomena by making them visible.” Works by Stilley, who died in 2021, explore “the line between tech and spirit…influenced by the interdisciplinary study of media, technology, sound, music, and the celestial.” (After being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 2005, Stilley continued creating his art, eventually operating a computer through eye movements alone.)

“pal.imp.sest/Unseen Seen” will run through July 13, 2024. SPARC’s new gallery space is located at 1000 Fremont Ave., Suite 120, South Pasadena. The public entrance to the gallery is located off the parking lot at the rear of the Fremont Centre on El Centro Ave., around the corner from Fiore’s Market Café. Gallery hours will vary after the May 18 opening. To schedule visits on other dates during the run of the show, contact curator Blue Trimarchi at (626) 676-4195. Admission is free.

The move to the Fremont Centre Properties building coincides with SPARC’s 15th anniversary of arts enrichment and advocacy in the community, marking the non-profit organization’s first permanent home. Founded as a grassroots effort in 2009, the South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit arts organization that develops educational and public arts programs, creates interactive projects, and collaborates with other organizations in the City of South Pasadena and the surrounding Los Angeles area to foster and produce cultural events featuring the visual, performing, literary and media arts. SPARC is open to people in all creative fields, art appreciators, art patrons, educators, and any others interested in helping the arts thrive in South Pasadena and neighboring communities.
