Old School at the Museum: A Century of Memories Through “Copa de Oro”

As the vibrant young minds of South Pasadena venture into the new academic year, we invite them and the community to take a nostalgic walk down memory lane with the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation, back to the hallowed halls of South Pasadena High School life in 1913.

A Legacy Etched in Beaux Arts Neoclassicism

Long before the present Art Deco-style building stood tall, the high school premises echoed with the laughter, dreams, and hopes of the youth studying in a magnificent Beaux Arts Neoclassicism establishment, reminiscent of iconic local landmarks such as the Huntington estate and library and the original South Pasadena Carnegie library. This institution, rich in history and tradition, was known as the South Pasadena-San Marino High School up until 1950.

Copa de Oro: Crafting Histories Since 1913

In the heart of the South Pasadena Historical Museum, you will find a monumental collection that predates the splitting of the South Pasadena-San Marino district in 1950, a time capsule preserving 110 years of history – the Copa de Oro yearbooks.

The inaugural edition crafted in 1913 by the high school students and faculty set the stage for a tradition that carried on undeterred, for over a century. Leaf through the pages adorned with black-and-white photographs, reminiscing the times shaped by the hands of hundreds of students, symbolizing unity, and representing a rich tapestry of experiences and memories fostered in the educational haven.

A Living Testimony of Student Life

Each volume of Copa de Oro is more than just a yearbook; it’s a canvas bearing the testimony of friendships forged, dreams nurtured, and young talents blossomed. This expansive collection is home to personal notes and messages, bearing witness to the myriad hues of student life across generations.

We invite students, alumni, and the curious minds to immerse themselves in this rich history housed in the South Pasadena Historical Museum.
