Senior Champion Awards Recognizes Two of City’s Top Volunteers

Two of the city’s strongest supporters will take center stage August 14, as the Senior Citizens’ Foundation of South Pasadena will honor the pair with their distinguished Senior Champion Awards.

Ellen Daigle and Sally Kilby, whose civic-minded duties and volunteerism are extraordinary, say organizers, will be celebrated during the 5-7 p.m. public event at the South Pasadena Senior Center. Tickets, including a wine and cheese reception, are $26 each.

Among her many contributions, Daigle, best known as owner of a highly respected silk-screening business in town, founded the Women Involved in South Pasadena Political Activism (WISPPA) where she serves currently as vice president. Over the years, Daigle has given her time by sitting on the South Pasadena Public Safety Commission, the Parks Commission, Community Redevelopment Commission and Senior Commission. She also helped launch South Pasadenans for Intelligent and Responsible Growth (SPRIG).

In local government, Kilby served as South Pasadena’s city clerk from 2000 to 2013, has held instrumental roles with the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club, the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Committee, the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, while backing a number of ballot measures as a committee member.

The Senior Citizens’ Foundation was created to ensure the that the South Pasadena Senior Center thrives and continues to have the necessary funding to deliver programming and services.

Sally and Ellen are two of the real gems in our community,” said Senior Citizen Foundation President Bill Cullinane. “The two of them help inspire the Senior Citizen Foundation to continually push forward in any way possible. The Senior Center and the Senior Citizen Foundation are organizations the citizens of South Pasadena can rightfully be proud to call their own.”

The Senior Champion Awards reception was launched a year ago when former South Pasadena mayor Bob Joe and longtime educator Granville “Granny” Thurman were honored.

For those wishing to purchase tickets to the Senior Champion Awards event or make a tax-deductible donation to the organization, visit: spsenior.org. They are also on sale by check at the South Pasadena Senior Center, 1102 Oxley Street.
