Rafael Casillas, interim public works director for the City of South Pasadena, is asking residents to be patient as major roadwork has begun on Monterey Road.

Construction is underway on the busy east-west thoroughfare from Meridian Avenue to Orange Grove Avenue. Casillas expects the project, funded by Measure R funds, to be finished by early August.

Measure R is a half-cent sales tax for Los Angeles County to finance new transportation projects and programs. The tax took effect July 2009.

Casillas said the work consists of concrete repairs, water infrastructure and sidewalk improvements followed by asphalt overlay. Toro Enterprise, based in Oxnard, is the contractor performing the work that will also include filling potholes and replacing water valves.
