Five dynamic, diverse musical performances will rock the Library ‘Carnegie Stage’ Concert for the Eclectic Music Festival on Saturday, April 28 starting at 3 p.m. The Carnegie Stage is in the Library Community Room located at 1115 El Centro Street. Doors will open for the Library Carnegie Stage Concert at 2:30 p.m. No tickets or reservations are necessary, but seating is limited and “festival style” (first come, first seated). Refreshments will be provided by the South Pasadena Woman’s Club and CDs will be available for purchase.
At 3 p.m. kickng off the free concert will be Calvin Joe and the Jazz Roots Experience. The JRX are a five member gospel-originated dynamo that fuses Jazz with R&B, Soul, Bluegrass and Rock ‘n’ Roll on originals and covers. Calvin Joe, also lead vocalist for the all-acoustic Orange Grove Rangers, is widely known as the “Asian Neil Diamond” and for his soulful baritone. He will be joined by Thomas Ross, Jr. , a Coltrane-styled saxophonist; Phil Burno am amazing electric guitarist; Andy Anders, a globe traveling bassists with GRAMMY- nominated, Lisa Haley & the Zydekats; and Karl Lee, a veteran drummer with numerous Southland bands. Special Guest Keyboardist for the Carnegie Stage show will be Hector Agosto, an LA-based singer/songwriter.
At 4:15 nationally-known Dave Kinnoin, one of the hardest-working artists in children’s music, has written songs for some of the most beloved characters in movies and on TV, including Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog, Winnie the Pooh, and Big Bird, Dave will be performing the first ever ‘Kids & Family’ Concert on the Library Eclectic Carnegie Stage. Dave’s show starts fast and maintains its enthusiastic energy throughout while he demonstrating his obvious love for young audiences who are encouraged to join in the fun., And, like a favorite cookie, a Dave Kinnoin concert has a surprise in the middle-: Sometimes poignant, often hilarious, Dave has recorded 8 solo albums and his acclaimed partnership with GRAMMY-winning songwriter Randy Sharp, Randy & Dave, has produced “Calling All the Elephants” and “Life on a Trampoline” CDs, collectively honored with 11 prestigious national awards, including Parents’ Choice Gold and NAPPA Gold.
At 5:15, John York, a commanding singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, well-known as a former member of the Sir Douglas Quintet, and especially The Byrds, will perform his dazzling “John York Sings Bob Dylan“ show. Songs like “All I Really Want to Do”, “Mr. Tambourine Man”, “Chimes of Freedom”, and “My Back Pages” – among others – were great hits for the Byrds and York authentically mines the deep connection to Dylan’s music that the Byrds maintained throughout their storied, groundbreaking career as one of the top American rock groups of the Sixties and the Seventies. According to legendary producer and lyricist Kim Fowley, “John York is the last pure voice of the Silver Sixties to make it intact into the 21st Century.” The show will be a unique solo showcase of many of Dylan’s most beloved songs by an artist with a deep personal connection to the music and muse of our most recent Nobel Prize winner.
At 6:30, David Plenn will bring his eclectic collection of songs accompanied by a stellar group of musicians. Saxophonist Taylor Plenn will be prominently featured on three of the tunes and the band will also be ably augmented by David Goodstein on drums, Danny McGough on keyboards, Lloyd Moffitt on bass, and vocalist Tara Austin. Singer/Songwriter Brad Colerick will make a Special Guest Appearance. Touches of rock, folk, blues, jazz, and even country run throughout Dave’s songs which are sparked by his slide guitar. As a songwriter, Dave’s had songs that have appeared on platinum and gold records, as well as in TV shows and movies.
At 8 pm, GRAMMY- winner Darlene Koldenhoven will appear with her ensemble of Special Guest Artists for a performance of her much acclaimed “Color Me Home Concert.” Darlene will present her beautiful vocals, graceful piano stylings, impressive synthesizer soloing, from her latest multi-award-winning album, “Color Me Home,” that debuted #1 on radio worldwide. Complementing her original art songs will be her guest soloists: Joanne Lazzaro on flutes, Earle Dumler on oboe & English horn; and Jane Carter on flugelhorn. Darlene’s tranquil, vibrant songs contain stunning melodies, intricate arrangements, and an easy pulse. Her vocalese and instrumental passages creatively blend new age, classical, jazzy, and world elements and demonstrate her authentic, unique artistry.

Free parking is available in the South Pasadena Unified School District lot at 1020 El Centro Street (entrance from Fairview Avenue between El Centro and Mission) and after noon at the Mission Meridian Parking Garage located at 805 Meridian Avenue adjacent to the Metro Gold Line Station, only one block from the Library.
