How to send GIFs in iMessage

In this guide, we will explain how to Send GIFs in Imessage. You’ve always been able to send static images to others via iMessage , but you may not know that you can also send animated GIFs .

There are many ways to do it. The simplest method is to use the built-in iMessage application “#images”, which allows you to search for all kinds of GIF files and send them quickly and easily. You can also share GIF files from other applications and send them via iMessage this way. We will show you how to do both.

The easy way: #images

The built-in iMessage app called “#images” is perhaps the best way to Send Gifs to your friends and family, as it’s easy to access and easy to find to find the right GIF.

To get started, open the Messages app on your iPhone and select the contact to whom you want to send the GIF.

At the bottom you will see your iMessage apps aligned. Look for the red icon with a magnifying glass and tap it when you see it. You may have to scroll through the applications before you find it.

After selecting it, a small section will appear from the bottom, displaying a handful of animated GIFs. From there, you can scroll through the endless list of random GIFs, or tap the search box (where it says “Find Images”) and type in a keyword related to the type of GIF you want.

Type a keyword and press “Search”.

A list of animated GIFs will be displayed related to your keyword search. Tap a GIF when you find one that you like.

After typing on the GIF, it will appear in the iMessage text box ready to be sent. You can send only the GIF, or you can also add a message to send with the GIF.

Once you have finished sending GIF files, you can exit the #images iMessage application and return to the keyboard by tapping the iMessage text box.

Sharing GIF files from other applications

If the #images iMessage application does not have the exact GIF you are looking for, you can instead open your own application of choice and search for a GIF.

We will not go into the details of all the places on the Internet where you can find GIFs, but I will use  the Giphy site  to find a GIF and use it as an example for this tutorial.

Once you have found the GIF you want, go ahead and tap it to open it. From there, press and hold on the GIF image and click “Copy”.

Go to iMessage and select a conversation thread from the person to whom you want to send the GIF. Press the text box once to display the keyboard, and then press it again to display the “Paste” prompt. Touch it when it appears.

The GIF image will stick in the text box. Press the Send button when you are ready.

Keep in mind that some websites and GIF applications do not allow you to paste the actual image into iMessage, Imgur is an example: you will only be able to paste a link to the Imgur website (or the application). the GIF.

However, if the link ends with “.gif”, iMessage will display the GIF image in iMessage (as shown below). Otherwise, it will simply display a link that you will have to tap to open. If you send the GIF link to an Android user, they will not be lucky because it will just display a link to the GIF, no matter what happens.
