What’s It Like Dating a Doctor?

By: Jason Lee

For most of us, our experience with doctors is either from binge-watching too much Grey’s Anatomy or Scrubs or from our own personal trips to our physicians. And usually when we’re worrying about our health, dating or what that doctor would be like on a date are the last things that cross our minds.

But what’s it like dating a doctor? Is it all that the movies and TV shows make it cracked up to be? Are there some drawbacks to be aware of? (We’re going to answer all of these today).

Most of you here probably fall into one of three categories—you are currently dating a doctor, you’re talking to a doctor that you might go out with, or you’re interested in maybe dating a doctor. The good news is that what we’re going to cover today will be applicable to all three groups!

And if you’re in the last group, we’d recommend taking some time to check out the best dating apps for doctors. Not only are these great dating sites FOR doctors, but they’re also great dating sites FOR MEETING doctors.

Pros of Dating a Doctor

  • They’re intelligent. – It takes years of schooling and a lot of smarts to make it as a doctor. Not only is your doctor bf or gf going to be smart medically, but you’ll get a smart-pants in other areas of life.
  • They’re financially stable. – Money is certainly not everything (or even that important) when it comes to finding love. That being said, there are a lot of perks that come with being financially stable. Not only do doctors make good money, but their jobs are usually pretty stable, especially if they have their own practice or work for a major hospital or partnership.
  • They can be your own personal WebMD. – Not feeling well? Not sure if something is a problem? How cool would it be to have access to someone who can answer all of these questions without a need to make an appointment. While you don’t want to take advantage of someone you’re dating, it is nice to enjoy some of the perks of their skillset.
  • Their listening skills are generally on point. – Doctors have to know how to listen to patients to figure out what’s wrong and correct the problem. When you’re dating a doctor, you get someone who professionally listens and solves problems.
  • Doctors are naturally caring people. – Most doctors get into the medical field because they like helping and taking care of people. If you think for one second this doesn’t bleed over into their personal lives, we need to send you in for a checkup. Get excited, because dating a doctor means dating someone who cares.
  • You may gain perspective. – It’s easy for us to fall into the trap of thinking that the little issues of our lives are major problems. However, when you date someone who deals with big-time issues like sickness and death on a daily basis, it helps to put life into perspective.

Cons of Dating a Doctor

  • Doctors are busy. – Taking care of people and saving lives is not an easy task. Expect your doctor to be busy, especially if they’re in the earlier stages of their career. This might mean long hours, being on call, or frequently needing to cancel plans.
  • Fixed plans may be a challenge. – When you ask someone what’s it like dating a doctor, the number one thing you’ll hear from people with experience is that fixed plans are a thing of the past. If you’re someone who is okay with spontaneousness and can go with the flow, wonderful. However, if you’re a heavy planner who doesn’t like when things change, dating a doctor may be a challenge.
  • They may be tired after work. – Even when a doctor is off from work, they’re probably going to be fairly tired from the exhaustive work. When dating a doctor, this is something you’re 100% going to have to be okay with. There may be days where they come home and just want to conk out on the couch and do nothing.
  • You’re probably not going to be the bread winner. – This really isn’t a con, but it’s something important to address when talking about what it’s like to date a doctor. Unless you have some other high-profile type of career, the doctor in the house will probably be the bread winner. Is this a bad thing? It shouldn’t be. But for some people it might cause problems if they aren’t able to get their ego in check.

So, What’s It Like Dating a Doctor?

You probably won’t get such a robust list of pros and cons for dating anyone in any other type of profession than medicine. There are a lot of great things that come with dating a doctor and a lot of things that you’ll need to be okay with.

Here’s the bottom line. Doctors are amazing people who really bring a lot to the table. They’re smart, driven, accomplished, caring, and hard working. But with those positives come long hours, sacrifice, fatigue, and no chance of making many fixed plans.

Is that going to work for you? It depends on you. If you’re flexible and able to go with the flow, it can be great. If you need things to be more stable, you might want to avoid dating doctors or anyone in the medical field.

Dating a doctor is like getting served filet mignon, but you might not get fed as frequently as other people. The good news is that the more established the doctor gets in their field, generally, the more free time they get.
