For Gulab Jamun Recipe: The Ingredients!

The ingredients for Gulab Jamun balls include:

  • 1 cup milk solids (khoya)
  • 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour (maida)
  • pinch of baking soda
  • 1 tbsp. clarified butter (ghee)
  • 2-3 tbsp. milk (only required for kneading)
  • Oil/ghee (only required for frying)

The ingredients for Sugar Syrup include:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp. rose water (this is optional)
  • A few strands of saffron (this is optional)

Gulab Jamun: The Process of Cooking!

Cooking Sugar Syrup…

  1. Mix well with water and sugar on medium heat in a saucepan.
  2. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Add cardamom powder and saffron strands.
  4. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes until it reaches a slightly sticky consistency.
  5. Add rose water, if using, and then turn off the heat.

Preparing Gulab Jamun Dough…

  1. In a mixing bowl, crumble the khoya until it becomes smooth.
  2. Add all-purpose flour, baking soda, and ghee to the khoya.
  3. Mix well, then gradually add milk to form a soft, smooth dough. Be cautious not to over-knead.

Shaping and Frying Gulab Jamun Balls…

  1. Divide the dough into small, equal-sized portions.
  2. Roll these portions into smooth balls; remember, the balls shouldn’t have cracks.
  3. Ensure the balls are free from cracks, which might break during frying.
  4. Heat oil/ghee in a thick-bottom pan on medium heat.
  5. Once the ghee or oil is hot, reduce the flame to low and carefully add the prepared balls.
  6. Fry the balls until they turn golden brown gently to ensure even cooking.
  7. Remove the balls from the oil or ghee and place them on a paper towel so that excessive grease is absorbed.

Soaking the Balls in Sugar Syrup…

  1. Place the fried Gulab Jamun balls into the warm sugar syrup.
  2. Allow them to soak for at least 1-2 hours, allowing the syrup to penetrate and sweeten the balls.
