Looking for a way to fix 100% Disk Usage issue in Windows 10? Actually, it is possible and in this article, I’m going to share some workaround to make that thing happen.

Windows is one of the best operating system available on the web which is users by the majority of the users. Every latest version of Windows OS comes with lots of new features accompanied with nasty bugs and issues. One out of them is 100% Disk usage. Mostly the users who have upgraded to Windows 10 from the previous version of windows are facing this issue, the little group running Windows 8 and Windows 7 also experiencing this issue.

The symptoms of this Windows issue are very clear your system responds slowly or sometimes suddenly stops responding. One can confirm this thing by opening Task Manager and switching to Performance tab. Here the Disk Usage will be 100% for sure in most of the cases.

The worst thing about this issue is that users who have purchased new laptop or desktop also start experiencing this sluggish behavior which is really heartbreaking. The majority of the users don’t even have any idea why Disk Usage is at 100%? Even it is not confirmed if it 100% disk usage is a known bug in Windows 10 or what are the exact reasons causing this issue.

How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

On the basis of personal experiments and checking various Windows forums I manage to get some possible ways which you can use to troubleshoot and fix 100% disk usage issue.

So here is what you can do:

1. Fix Skype and Chrome Combo causing the issue

According to one Microsoft Answers thread, this is caused by the combination of two application named as Google Chrome and Skype. Here is how it can be fixed:

Google Chrome

Launch Google Chrome, type this address chrome://settings/ and hit Enter. Scroll down until you see “Show Advanced Settings” click on it.

Under Privacy uncheck option which reads “Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly” Just like shown in the following screenshot.

Skype

Make sure you’re not using Skype. In case, if it is running Quit it first. You can track and quit this thing right from Task Manager.

After that, In Windows Explorer, you need to navigate to the following directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\

Here you need to make right click on the “Skype.exe” file -> click on “Properties” -> Switch to “Security” tab -> Click on “Edit” button -> Select “ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES

Under Allow Column check, you’re required to place a tick in the “Write” box -> Click Apply -> Click OK -> Again Click OK.

That’s it. This will fix the issue for sure. To confirm this thing, you can run Skype and launch Task Manager -> Switch to Performance tab -> Here you will no longer see 100% disk usage.

Keep in mind: The same issue with other application could also cause 100% disk usage.

In case, you’re not using Google Chrome and Skype, then you can try secondary workarounds which I’m going to cover in upcoming lines.

2. Disable show me tips about Windows (Recommended)

According to some users, they fixed the issue by disabling the show me tips about Windows feature. So you can also try this. To disable it launch the Settings app -> System -> Notifications & actions. Here on the left right pane scroll down until you see “Get tips, tricks, and suggestion as you use Windows” use the toggle switch to turn it off.

3. Disable the Superfetch Service

Some users reported that they fixed the same issue by disabling Superfetch Service. Here is how you can disable it:

In the Start menu search bar type Superfetch when the desktop app appears in the search results click to run it. Here in the list of services scroll down until you find Superfetch service, double-click on it. It will launch Superfetch properties windows. Under Startup type, select disable using drop-down.

4. Disable Print Spooler Service

Some users reported that they fixed the issue by disabling the Print Spoiler. So open the service windows just like discussed in the above step look for service with name Print Spooler and disable it.

5. Remove Plugins

Another suggestion is to remove all the plugin installed on each browser one by one. In most of the cases, Adobe Flash and Shockwave Player are the main culprits causing the issue.

6. Uninstall Browser

You need to uninstall all the browser from the Windows 10 keeping Edge and the Internet Explorer. You need to perform this step to examine the issue with the plugins.

For that, Launch Settings app -> Apps -> Apps & features. Here on the right pane look for the browser and uninstall them.

7. Delete “Temp”, “%Temp%” and “Prefetch” files

Once you have uninstalled all the browsers from your system simply delete all the files available in the “Temp”, “%Temp%” and “Prefetch” folder. For that,

Press WIN + R to launch RUN dialog box. Type Temp and click ok. Delete all the files in the folder. Similarly, you need to delete %Temp% and Prefetch folder files.

Restart the system and check it for around 15-20 minutes. If this fixes the issue, you can reinstall all the browser which you have uninstalled in above steps.

Some other suggestions

In case, Task Manager is showing 100% disk utilization on your Windows 10 device even at a light or no workload with Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) mode enabled. You can refer to Microsoft support article to fix the issue.

Launch the Command Prompt as administrator type following command in it and hit Enter

chkdsk.exe /f /r
  • /f It will fix the detected errors.
  • /r Find out Bad Sectors and try to recover the information.

Sometimes device drivers may be causing the issue. So try to update the device drivers. You can download latest drivers for your system from manufacturer websites.

That’s it!

So these are some possible ways which work for users in fixing the 100% disk usage issue. Why don’t you give a try these suggestions? Also if you have any other working suggestion which worked for you, but I fail to add into this article. Feel free to share it in the comments.
