Fix: Windows 10 Brightness Not Working or Changes Automatically

Lots of users complaining that Windows 10 Brightness not working or sometimes it changes automatically. In case, you’re also facing the same issue, then this post will throw some light on it.

Most of the notebooks and laptops come with keyboard shortcuts to manage screen brightness level or adjust the display. While on the desktop there is a dedicated button available on the right or left side of the monitor panel to manage the same thing

In most of the cases after performing a clean installation of Windows 10 or upgrading to Windows 10 from the previous version, you might notice that brightness settings available in Settings app or brightness control on the keyboard not working properly.

Even some users reported that in the same situation the brightness of Windows 10 changes automatically which is really weird.

Fix: Windows 10 Brightness not working or Changes automatically

There might be lots of reason why you’re facing this brightness bug in Windows 10. In case, you’re not able to adjust brightness in Windows 10, then follow the all the possible ways to troubleshoot and fix this error.

1. Update video and graphic drivers

One of the best solution to fix this issue is by updating video and graphic drivers. Here is what you need to do:

  • Make a right click on Start button -> Select Device Manager -> Click on Display adapters.
  • Here select display adapter your system running. It can Intel or Nvidia driver depending on the system configuration. Simply select one and make right click on it and from the context menu select Update Driver Software.
  • Now click on the option which reads “Search automatically for updated driver software”. This will start looking for the latest drivers available for your machine.
  • Once done it will download and install them automatically.
  • Reboot. Once done.

Check out if this fixes the issue. In case, you see a message that your system already have latest drivers available, then skip this step and head over to next step.

2. Reset Power Plan Settings to Default

For that, you need to launch Control Panel -> All Contol Panel Items -> Power Options -> Click on Change Plan Settings for active power plan (It can be for Balanced or Power saver, you need to click on the one you using).

Here click on the “Restore default settings for this plan” link to reset the default power plan settings.

3. Disable Adaptive brightness

Some user reported that they fixed the issue by disabling Adaptive brightness. Here is how you can disable it on your system:

Open Control Panel -> Power Options -> Click Change plan settings link for active power plan -> Click Advanced power settings link this will launch Power Options dialog box.

Here Expand Display -> Enable Adaptive Brightness-> Turn it off -> Apply -> OK.

Now check if this fixes the issue.

4. Disable Intel Power Saving Technology

In case, you have Dell or Vaio laptop running Intel processor, then there is an Intel Power Saving Technology option available in Dell or Vaio Control Center. Simply disable this feature from there and reboot your system.

5. Disable BrightnessReset

To disable BrightnessReset, you need to:

Launch Task Scheduler using Start menu search bar. On the left pane, you will find out Task Scheduler Library. Here you need to navigate to Microsoft -> Windows -> Display -> Brightness.

Now on the right pane, if there is scheduled task named as BrightnessReset, you need to make double click on it -> Properties -> Triggers tab -> Edit-> Disable it-> Reboot your system.

Now see if this fixes the issue. In case, if this failed to fix the issue enable BrightnessReset again using same steps.

6. Run Power Troubleshooter

In case, above discussed method failed to fixes the issue, then you can take help of inbuilt Power Troubleshooter in Windows 10. Here is what you need to do to run troubleshooter:

Launch Settings app -> Update & security -> On left pane, Troubleshoot -> On right pane, click on Power.

This will launch the Power Troubleshooter. Simply follow the instructions, the troubleshooter will automatically detect any issue related to power settings and try to fix the issue.

7. Take Help of PowerCFG command line tool

In case, you want to troubleshooter Power Plans further, you can take help of inbuilt PowerCFG command line tool
