Sometimes while booting into Windows we see an error message which reads “Invalid system disk, Replace the disk and then press any key“. In case, you’re also seeing this error, then in this post, you will read about possible ways to troubleshoot the issue.
Normally this type of error appears on the boot screen when hard Disk display no working operating system from where it can boot or computer fails to find a hard disk to boot. In simple language, it means that Boot partition or Boot Disk or data could have damaged or corrupted which prevents your system from booting normally.
Fix: Invalid System Disk
The exact message which users see on the boot screen is:
Invalid system disk, Replace the disk and then press any key. Reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key.
The good thing is that users can troubleshoot the issue. In case, you’re seeing this error, here is what you can do:
1. Check Boot Disk Priority
You need to boot into your system BIOS settings and check if Boot Disk is the first bootable device. You can manage these changes in BIOS -> Advanced BIOS Features -> Hard Disk Boot Priority.
Once done, save the changes and exit BIOS.
2. Repair Master Boot Record
Sometimes repairing Master Boot Record fix the discussed issue. It can be done using the Bootrec.exe tool. Here is how you can do that:
From boot screen enter into Windows Recovery Menu -> Troubleshoot -> Automatic Repair menu -> Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt, type following commands back to back:
bootrec /RebuildBcd bootrec /fixMbr bootrec /fixboot
Exit command prompt and reboot your system. In some situations, you need to run additional commands:
bootsect /nt60 SYS or bootsect /nt60 ALL
It is highly recommended to create System Recovery Disk or Backup MBR. For that, you need to follow these steps:
- Press WIN + R and RecoveryDrive.exe
- Click Next and insert USB drive and it will start creating a recovery drive for your USB drive.
3. Run Automatic Repair
Some users reported that they fix the same issue by running Automatic Repair. For that, from boot screen enter into Windows Recovery Menu -> Troubleshoot -> Automatic Repair menu.
4. Run ChkDsk
You can Run ChkDsk on the Boot partition. Maybe you need to boot your system from external media for this. For that, launch the Command Prompt by searching the same in the Start menu search bar and once it appears in the search result make a right click and Run as administrator.
In the command prompt type following command and hit enter.
chkdsk
Suppose you want a report for C drive, you need to type chkdsk c:
In case, you want to check the list of additional parameters and switches, type chkdsk /?
You can type these parameters at the end of the command to specialized operations. You can check the complete ChkDsk Parameters
