Fix: Microsoft Edge Browser Hangs, Freezes Crashes Windows 10

In today’s article, I’m going to share some suggestion using which you can troubleshoot and fix Microsoft Edge Browser hangs, freezes or crashes issue in Windows 10.

Microsoft Edge is the default web browser in the Windows 10. According to Microsoft, it is one of the fastest modern browsers available on the internet for Windows 10. In a comparison of the first build released by Microsoft, the latest build has lots of features still users are not satisfied because of the Edge browser crashes, hangs or freezes.

So here is what you can try to fix the issue

1. Reset Microsoft Edge

Users can Reset Microsoft Edge browser to a default state to fix the issue. Here is what you need to do:

Launch Settings app -> Apps -> Apps & features. On the right side, find out Microsoft Edge simply click on it and then click on Advanced options. On this page, click on Reset button.

Note: You will see above option if you’re running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update build

2. Use InPrivate Window

Launch Microsoft Edge, click on the (…) More action. Here click on New InPrivate windows to start the browser in InPrivate Browsing mode.

I hope this fixes the issue.

3. Set Start Page to about: blank

Some users reported that they fixed the browser issue by setting the Start page of the Edge browser and tab to about:blank, disable feeds, etc.

4. Run Windows App Troubleshooter

Windows 10 operating system has various troubleshooter to fix different components. To fix issues related to Edge browser, you can run Windows App Troubleshooter. For that

Launch the Settings app -> Update & security -> Troubleshoot (Left Pane) -> Windows App Troubleshooter (Right pane). Run the troubleshooter and follow the instructions.

5. Delete Content of Edge Browser folder

You need to navigate to the following directory and delete all the content inside the folder:

C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

This will definitely fix the issue. In case, this method didn’t work check out other suggestion.

6. Remove Third Party Extensions

It is expected that the use of third party extension available for Edge browser is one of the real reason behind crashes. So it is a good idea to disable theme. Also, it is recommended you must install extensions available on Windows Store.

To remove the extension, launch Edge browser -> click on (…) More action icon -> Extension -> Select Extension -> Uninstall

7. Switch from Microsoft Account to Local account

Sometimes switching from Microsoft account to Local account or vice versa fix the issues related to Edge browser.

8. Create new users account

Some users also suggested that when they create a new users account. In this, is situation the browser will be in fresh state and it is expected that you will not face any issue while using Edge browser

9. Reinstall Edge browser

10. Clean Install Windows 10

In case, nothing helped you, then last resort is to perform a clean installation of Windows 10. It is recommended you must install the latest build available. Refer to my previous article on how to fresh install Windows 10.
