How to Select Model Train for a Beginner

If you are to select or choose the right Model Train as a beginner, then you definitely have to start asking few questions so as to avoid frequent mistakes usually made by beginners.

You see, understanding the concept of model train Scale is of utmost importance and then you can ask which model train scale suits you best?

Do you know that scale is the actual proportion of the replica to the real train? Good, for example, the OO scale locomotives are 1/76 the actual size of the real locomotive. The width between the inside running edge of the track is the Model Train Gauge.

What Are The Type of Scales Available?

Since we both know that the Model trains are replicas of the real locomotive, it’s best if you know the main types of model train scales and their minimum turning radius.

  • Z scale 1: 220 – Minimum Radius 5.75 inches
  • N scale 1: 160 – Minimum Radius 7.5 inches
  • HO scale 1: 87 – Minimum Radius 15 inches
  • OO scale 1: 76 – Minimum Radius 21 inches
  • S scale 1: 64 – Minimum Radius 22.5 inches
  • O scale 1: 48 – Minimum Radius 24 inches

Z scale is obviously the smallest scale while the O scale is the largest. Please, you should not that all attributes or accessories as in; bridges, roads, trees and others are scaled to the relevant size.

How Is The Space Available?

Larger scales like the Z scale can be quite hard when creating a great realistic layout which makes it in need of more details and attention. Unlike the HO scale which is easier and more common because it is the almost half of the size of the layout in O scale and also mistakes are easily hidden in smaller scales.

The switching layout for HO scale can be created on a 4 x 1-foot table and 3 feet 6-inch x 4 feet table will be needed for a continuous loop railroad. Well, approximately a space of 6feet x 4 feet will create a beautiful HO scale layout with a continuous loop. If you are having a smaller space, then an N scale railroad can be built in a space that is almost half of the HO model train layout.

Which Scale Can I Choose?

It has been discovered that the men and children love operating the big scales, from HO to Z scale majorly because they do not derail easily because of their bulkiness. If you have a sight problem I will definitely tell you to consider the larger scales. While the ladies seems to prefer the small scales.

Which Accessories Are Available For The Scale Am Going to Select?

Generally, HOscale has gained its popularity among other scales over the years and these have aided the availability of more accessories of HO scale by the manufacturer. If you are considering a digital controller which will have a lot of switching operations, then HO is the best choice.
