What is a Category in WordPress?

The Category is a predefined taxonomy in WordPress, which is used to sort and group the publishing content into sections.

Any published content or post on your website can be categorized into different sections and can be filed under one or more Categories to navigate the content easily.

If no category is specified for the certain post, then it will automatically filed under Default Category. Normally after installation of a new WordPress, default category is “Uncategorized” and the administrator can change the default category from Uncategorized to any available categories from the list.

How to Add Categories:

There are 2 ways to create categories in WordPress. You can create a category directly from the post edit screen while you writing the post and another way to create a category from add new category option under posts.

Add Category From The Post Edit Screen:

Click on add new category option in the post edit screen under category Meta box. Write the category name in the box and click on add new category below the box. Now new category is created and you can file the post under a created category.

Add Category From WordPress Dashboard:

Click on the category under posts in WordPress dashboard to create a new Category from WordPress dashboard. Add category name and create a slug if you want or else given category name only considered as slug name by default. If you are creating a child category then choose a parent category from the available categories list. Provide a description and click on Add new Category option.

Category name is the mandatory option and you can skip the other fields if you don’t require.

Once created the categories, all categories list will be displayed here and you can also edit and delete the categories.

How to Edit Categories:

You can check all available and created categories in Posts >> categories in WordPress dashboard. Here you can modify the category name, slug, description and change or remove the parent category by click on the edit option. Go to categories and move the cursor to category and click on edit option.  Now you can do the modifications as per your needs.

You can also delete the categories from this screen by clicking on delete option. Deleting the categories, will not remove the posts but change the post categories to the default category.

Make sure you should not delete the default category. If you want to delete the default category, first make sure to assign the default position to another category and proceed.

How to Assign Default Category:

Normally after installation of a new WordPress, default category is “Uncategorized” and the administrator needs to change the default category from Uncategorized to any available categories from the list. First, delete the Uncategorized category and create new categories.

Once created the categories, go to settings >> writing in WordPress dashboard and go to default post category and assign the default status to any category from the list and click on save changes.
