Cooling Mattress Pads

Best Cooling Mattress Pad 2017

As we are now coming out of the cold winter months, overheating at night becomes a big disrupter to a good night’s sleep. I think everyone can agree that waking up in a sweat sucks!

A week ago I decided to find a solution to this issue, and it turns out there are a lot of different options. After researching for days, I documented them all for my own use and figured it would be helpful to share with the world.

There are so many different ways to cool down a room, but none are as easy as preventing your bed from getting too hot in the first place. You could wake up in the middle of the night and take off a cover; get out of bed and open a window, or turn on a fan and be kept awake by the noise. All of these may work for you, and I have definitely tried them in the past, but prevention is always the best medicine.

Different types of cooling mattress pads

There are 3 main options of Cooling Pads:

  • Water cooling/heating pad (kind of like an Electric Cooling Blanket
  • Cooling/Heating Fan for your bed (not what you may expect)
  • Under blanket made from material designed to regulate your temperature and wick away sweat

Water Cooling/Heating Pad

This is an active cooling/heating pad that allows you to select your ideal Temperature, and it will remain that temperature for the whole night. This means that you can just set and forget it, and there will be no more nights where you wake up drenched in sweat

Cooling/Heating Fan

This is basically a fancy heater – efficient, quiet and effective. It is a small heater which blows the air into a pipe, and you put the end of the hose in your bed. It is very slim and hooks onto the side of the bed so you shouldn’t notice it.

Under Blanket

This is an under-blanket, but it isn’t designed to keep you warm. There are many different materials to choose from, so if you have allergies or just a preference for a certain fabric, you should find one that works for you.

These will not be as effective as the active options that are shown above, but will still be better than just sleeping on the Mattress. If you need something to cool down a bit at night but don’t want to spend a lot of money, take a look below and see if any of the options look like they can help you!

Gel Memory Foam Topper, Queen Size 2 Inch Thick

“Comfortably Perfect” – or so they say. The Gel Memory Foam Topper is made from an “open structure design”. This basically means it has small holes through it which allow air to flow. Having good airflow means you should stay cooler than a normal mattress topper, or only using a sheet over the mattress.

The topper has quite a low density so it is reasonably soft. In theory, this would mean that the ‘open structure’ would compress down, and not give as much airflow. Reading through all of the reviews have not shown this to be true. Overall buyers have been more than satisfied – Average 4.6/5 Stars!

The benefits of this topper don’t stop at keeping you cool. There are MANY stories of buyers that have found instant relief from aches, pains and old injuries. It is ideal for any type of sleeping position due to the fact that it is quite soft. This means that it relieves pressure on your shoulder if you sleep on your side. And it provides ergonomic support for back or front sleepers.

The foam is CertiPUR-US® CERTIFIED, so you can be confident that you are not bringing anything unhealthy into your home. Considering the amount of time you will spend on the topper this should be a requirement for any foam topper you are considering purchasing.

If you are concerned about warranties – look no further. It has a 60-day money back guarantee, so if you don’t like it, you can return it. No questions asked – well maybe just one about why you want to return it…It also has a 3-year Manufacturers warranty, so if there are any issues within that time excluding wear and tear or misuse, you should be able to get it replaced.

The sizes available range from Twin up to California King. So no matter what size bed you have, you should be able to get a topper that fits.

Chilipad

This is the first of 2 premium options in the list. The Chilipad has been recommended by many newspapers and celebrities. From The Jimmy Fallon Show to The Wall Street Journal, to Tim Ferriss. If you are looking for something to truly fix your discomfort, whether you are too hot or too cold in the night, then this is the option for you.

At first look, the Chilipad appears to be something from the future. It is a normal looking mattress protector, with an electric water heater?

The way the Chilipad works is by pumping cold (or hot) water through tiny silicon tubes in the blanket on your bed. You set the temperature using the remote or on the cube, then the cube will go to work, keeping the temperature ideal for you.

The temperature ranges from 55F to 110F. So it should keep you comfortable if you are in the middle of summer in San Diego or winter in Alaska. It is also an efficient unit, averaging only 80W energy usage. This makes it much more efficient than running a fan or central heating.

BedJet

The BedJet is the second premium option in the list, but it is a completely different design than the first. Rather than being water cooled (or heated), the Bedjet blows air into your bed, so it is like having a fan in bed.

It isn’t just a heater with a fancy attachment, the Bedjet was designed from the ground up to fit it’s purpose. Check out it’s advanced features:

  • Heater operates below dust’s burning point, so it doesn’t smell
  • Flameproof skin
  • Acoustic damping technology so it barely makes any noise
  • Bluetooth controls from your mobile phone

All of this put together has created a very polished and sophisticated product. Within seconds of the Bedjet running your bed will be at the temperature that you choose. And if you aren’t happy with it, you can control the temperature from your mobile phone! No batteries to replace, no lost remotes, and you don’t have to get out of bed to adjust it.

They also have the DualZone option which is great if you sleep with your partner. It is basically 2 Bedjet units with one of their flat sheets which are designed for optimal airflow. This is great if you and your partner like to have the bed at different temperatures – no fighting over the controls.

The few complaints about the product were all about it not cooling down the whole bed. If you aren’t happy with it, Bedjet will give you a full refund so don’t worry!

Rated 4.5/5 from almost 500 reviews shows how good this product is.

Linenspa Instant Cooling

The Linenspa Instant Cooling pad is a great budget-friendly option if you are looking to cool down a little bit at night. It may not make a huge difference, but at such a low price why not give it a try?

It is designed to be left out on a flat surface to cool down. Once it is cool, just put it in your bed or under your pillow for hours of relief from the heat.

The design of the pad is that the gel inside is solid while it is cold. As it heats up, it turns into a gel which absorbs and distributes heat from your body.

It is a relatively small pad compared with the other options, which means it has a lot of uses. A lot of buyers use it under their pillow. You could also freeze it and put it on your back for pain relief or anti-inflammation.

Overall this looks like a good product for the price, and should help regulate your body temperature and stop night sweats.

Outlast Temperature Regulating Mattress Pad

The Outlast Cooling Mattress Pad is another different design in our list. It is the first option that has 100% Cotton Sateen which is great for it’s breath-ability. It is a passive cooling pad which works by drawing away heat and sweat from your body.

The way it does this is by using a technology designed for NASA called Outlast Thermocules. This is an advanced technology which absorbs, stores, then releases heat slowly away from your body. Rather than just wicking away sweat, it proactively manages the temperature around it.

This is a great option if you are looking for an under-blanket to counteract the heat from your mattress. Buyers have had great results putting this over a memory foam mattress as they are known to get hot. The other previous options in this list are quite bulky in comparison, so if you want something discreet which doesn’t require any adjusting it is worth a look.

Bamboo Mattress Pad with Fitted Skirt

This Bamboo Mattress Pad is the least technologically advanced option, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t effective. Rather than having features to draw heat away, or actively cool down your bed, it is designed to allow air to flow, and wick away sweat.

Sometimes you just need to go back to basics!

On top of the basic benefits of this pad, it is also Waterproof! So if you are after something to protect your mattress, but don’t want to sleep on a plastic sheet this may be the answer. Underneath the Hypoallergenic bamboo top, it has a plastic layer to protect the bed from liquids, and you from dust mites.

As it provides a sealed layer between you and the mattress, it also means you have protection from bed bugs. If you did get bed bugs or any other type of pest, you could just take off the sheets and mattress protector and give them a wash.

This is another cheap option in the list, with great reviews. It has a ranking for 4.7/5 from almost 700 reviews! For a 100% bamboo mattress protector the price is low, plus you have the additional benefits listed above.

It also comes with a 90-day satisfaction guarantee, so if you find that it isn’t as effective as you want, or have any other issues you can return it for a full refund.

Short Buyers Guide

When picking a cooling mattress pad there are a few main things to consider:

Price
Materials
How hot do you get?
If you have a high budget and need something very effective, the active cooling options (electric) will be the most effective. As you can control the temperature of the bed, it means that on very hot nights you are able to drop the temperature down further to counteract the heat. It also means that if you need additional warmth in winter you can use them to warm up the bed.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, there are a lot of cheaper options that will help to keep you cool and dry at night. I suggest thinking about the type of material you prefer. Whether that is cotton, bamboo or a type of polyester, and finding something that has good reviews.

If you do not go with one of our recommendations, please read through the product reviews to make sure it has cooling benefits. Some products are advertised as cooling but only act as a mattress protector.
