A gym where fitness fans can embrace their inner Tarzan and work out in a club with natural vegetation, scents and sounds has opened in London.
Described as “an organic gym concept for big city life”, the pop-up “biophilic gym” in Ladbroke Grove is open now until early February.
Biophilic is the idea that humans seek natural environments and the gym, designed by landscape architect Lily Jencks, is based on the concept that people are mentally and physically healthier when connected to nature.
Gym-goers work out in a space lined with a fake grass carpet and filled with air-purifying plants — the same used by Nasa to provide cleaner air for space stations — while bird song, bongo drums and animal noises play in the background and pine essence fills the air.
The company behind the gym, Biofit, founded by fitness entrepreneur Matt Morley in 2015, has also developed a range of nature-focused exercise equipment using timber, cotton and rope.
Gym classes focus on movement, mobility, strength, stamina or play and fight. Mr Morley said: “Evolutionary history shows we’ve been lifting, carrying, jumping, striking and crawling for millions of years, working at varying intensities, so we start there.”
He hopes the pop-up will spark the interest of business developers who will fund a full-time gym.
