Mark Vientos hits first home run of 2024 for Syracuse Mets

Mark Vientos hit his first home run of the minor league season Saturday afternoon with the Syracuse Mets. The right-handed slugger’s solo shot went a projected 299 feet on a sinker out of the zone from LHP Jose La Sorsa of Rochester. It was Syracuse’s first run of the game in its eventual 6-2 loss, knocking the Triple-A team to 1-1 on the season.Vientos’ homer was his first hit on Saturday — he finished 2-for-3 with a double, walk and a strikeout. The 24-year-old went 0-for-3 on Friday, Syracuse’s first game of the season but he did have a walk and scored a run. With the late-spring signing of DH J.D. Martinez, Vientos’ potential Opening Day roster spot was taken by the veteran hitter. The Mets organization felt it best that Vientos receive everyday at-bats in the minors as opposed to coming off the bench.Last season in Triple-A, Vientos slashed .306/.387/.612 with 16 home runs and 50 RBI in 61 games. But it was his stint with the Mets last year that raised some eyebrows. In 65 games last season, Vientos batted just .211 with nine home runs and 22 RBI. However, he went 20-for-84 (.238) with six home runs and 11 RBI in September to end the season. That power carried over into the spring where he launched five homers and drove in nine RBI in 19 games.A day after Luis Gilbert and Luisangel Acuna hit back-to-back home runs, the duo went hitless going a combined 0-for-8 with a strikeout.
