Serie A Inks $4.8 Billion Domestic Media Deal With DAZN and Sky

It is never a simple transaction in Serie A.After four months of negotiations, clubs from Italy’s top-flight soccer League accepted a $4.8 billion (€4.5 billion) domestic media rights deal with the current holders DAZN and Sky Italy for the 2024-2029 seasons. The five-year deal amounts to $900 million per year.More from Sportico.comAC Milan Turns a Profit for First Time in 17 Years on Revenue SurgePremier League Sees Record Transfer Spending With Saudis in MarketBusiness Beyond the Game: AC Milan CEO on Pulisic, Yankees and U.S.Serie A—which includes clubs AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan and Roma—was seeking deals worth $3.8 billion (€3.6 billion) over three years, and up to $7.4 billion (€7.2 billion) for a five-year period. Serie A’s current domestic deal is half of what the Premier League collects under its existing broadcast deals in its home market in the U.K. Serie A’s international broadcast deal for 2021-2024 is worth around $717 million (€670 million), a fraction of EPL’s $6.55 billion for 2022-2025.Last year, Serie A implemented a new regulatory framework to help the league better negotiate and commercialize its broadcasting rights to close the gap with other top leagues in Europe, including the EPL, LaLiga and Ligue 1. The league moved from a three-year to a five-year cycle for the domestic rights. There are no time restrictions on a deal for the league’s international media rights.Representatives from DAZN and Sky Italy did not respond to requests for comment.Serie A opened the bidding process for the 2024-2029 seasons back in June. But the league unanimously decided not to accept any of the six initial offers presented by DAZN, Sky and Mediaset. The league then held private negotiations with the bidders, but none of the offers exceeded the minimum threshold of $1.15 billion established by the league, according to people close to the deal.Serie A was the only “big five” league to record a decrease in aggregate revenues in 2021-22, according to a report by Deloitte. That decrease was driven by Serie A’s lower broadcast revenue. The league’s total revenue fell 7% to $2.6 billion (€2.4 billion).Despite significant financial challenges competing with the Premier League and LaLiga, and the plusvalenze scandal, Serie A is seeing a rebound on the pitch. Last season, Napoli celebrated the Scudetto after a 33-year drought, and three Italian teams reached the finals of top European club competitions: Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League, AS Roma in the Europa League and Fiorentina in the Conference League. And on Monday, AC Milan posted its first yearly profit in 17 years, reporting revenues of more than $400 million.Best of Sportico.comTimeline of Record-Setting Sports Team Sales: Data VizName, Image and Likeness: A Guide to College Athlete NIL Deals, CompensationClick here to read the full article.
