Erik Ten Hag expects to still have signings veto at Manchester United despite Jim Ratcliffe takeover

Until I hear anything I will just keep focusing on my job and that is winning games and trying to get the best out of the season.”United, who are currently 10th in the Premier League after a torrid start to the season, face bottom club Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday night hoping to build on their last-gasp victory over Brentford before the international break.Ten Hag could welcome back defenders Raphael Varane and Sergio Reguilon from injury, but has lost midfielder Casemiro to an ankle problem as he continues to wrestle with the absence of a number of key players through injury.Casemiro added his name to a long list of United players out with injury – Getty Images/James GillSupporters are waiting to see what the potential involvement of Ratcliffe could mean for the club. Telegraph Sport revealed last weekend how the billionaire owner of chemical giants Ineos would take over football operations if the deal goes through. The Financial Times has subsequently reported that Ratcliffe and Sir David Brailsford – director of sports at Ineos and British Cycling’s former performance director – would sit on a committee overseeing football matters with Joel Glazer, the United co-chairman.Ratcliffe hopes to have a deal fully finalised in time for him to make key decisions in the January transfer window when United may have to offload players before they can bring anyone in.Harry Maguire has hinted that he may have to reconsider his future given his lack of playing time while his England team-mate, Jadon Sancho, is currently banished from United’s first team squad after publicly criticising Ten Hag in a social media post last month.Meanwhile, Ten Hag has told goalkeeper Andre Onana he must raise his game and that the constant upheaval in defence owing to United’s injury crisis does not excuse some of his mistakes.“He knows – we know – he will do much better,” Ten Hag said. “He has to make his future by giving better performances. I’m sure he will do.“I will never use injuries as an excuse and Andre is not doing that either. But of course every time you have a different defending line in front of you it is not helpful. You don’t get the routines, that’s a problem, but you have to deal with it and that’s the situation we are in. But it didn’t help his integration, absolutely.”Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
