Yankees’ Hal Steinbrenner pondering personnel changes after meeting with team officials

NEW YORK — Three days of meetings after the Yankees’ miserable 82-80 season has owner Hal Steinbrenner Pondering personnel changes with the organization. The Bombers have been MLB’s poster child for consistency showing a reluctance to make structural changes in years past — as seen by Brian Cashman’s 24-year tenure as general manager — however, the son of ‘The Boss’ appears ready to shake things up after missing the postseason with the second-highest payroll in baseball ($281 million).“We’re going to be making some changes. Some may be more subtle than others. But I think we’ve uncovered certainly things we can do better,” Steinbrenner said Wednesday during a panel discussion at Sportico’s Invest in Sports conference. The 53-year-old told The Associated Press that “Anything’s possible. There’s a lot more discussions to be had.”Steinbrenner appeared along team president Randy Levine at the event. The initial discussions last week included a group of 15 team officials at their facilities in Tampa as they continue to do a deep dive into what went wrong with the fourth-place Bombers after entering the season with championship aspirations. This was the message Steinbrenner said he gave to the Yankees officials at the start of the gathering: “I want you to challenge everything, all of our philosophies, all of our practices, but more importantly, in a respectful way, I want you to challenge each other. I want you to critique each other. Check your egos at the door.”“At times it got a little dicey. but it was respectful the entire time,” Steinbrenner said. “And there wasn’t one stone we left unturned, from health of the team, what we’re doing in the clubhouse, clubhouse culture, what we do in the weight room, analytics, pro scouting, biomechanics, is there enough communication between everybody.”However, the owner did not commit to making changes within the ranks of the organization saying “possibly personnel, but not necessarily personnel,” during the conference. The possible changes likely would not be the ones fans were clamoring for as Cashman inked a four-year contract last offseason and manager Aaron Boone is under contract for one more season with a team option for 2025 and it’s been widely reported that neither of the two are in jeopardy of losing their job. There’s also the possibility that there is no bloodshed and everything remains virtually intact within the Yankees’ hierarchy.“It could be practices. It could be the way people communicate when we bring a young minor leaguer up to the major league level, are the major league coaches talking enough to player development and vice versa,” Steinbrenner said. “Are the major league coaches really getting into reading a lot of research because we do note as these kids go from one level to the next, what’s being worked on, what the weaknesses are, what their strengths are.”Steinbrenner also met with Aaron Judge to fill him on the meetings Tuesday at Yankee Stadium and he plans to meet with ace Gerrit Cole at some point, according to the AP.The Yanks missed the postseason for the first time since 2016 and put their streak of 31 seasons finishing above .500 in jeopardy.
