NFL power rankings, Week 1. Bills and Chiefs fight it out

Bryan M. Bennett/Getty Images.

In January, the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs put together an amazing performance. Now, entering September, they might well be the league’s best teams.

32

Atlanta Falcons

Name a half-dozen players on the Falcons’ roster. Go.

31

Seattle Seahawks

Seattle doesn’t have a quarterback, but it has two first-round picks in a loaded class come 2023. This could be a minor blip for Seattle.

30

Chicago Bears

This entire season is all about Justin Fields’ progress.

29

Houston Texans

Is Davis Mills the solution, or just a third round pick who can play a bit but not enough to be an effective long-term starter, or both?

28

New York Giants

This is where we begin to recover from the disaster of Dave Gettleman’s role as general manager.

27

New York Jets

Although the Jets had an impressive draft, their roster is filled with major problems. Zach Wilson is currently on the shelf.

26

Carolina Panthers

This is the big year for Matt Rhule, and it doesn’t look promising. There are problems with the defense, Baker Mayfield is not great, and there are holes in the offensive line.

25

Detroit Lions

Love what Dan Campbell is building, but until the Lions find a quarterback for the long haul, they’ll struggle to compete.

24

New England Patriots

This is sacrilege on the Patriots, but it is a sign of their talent. New England doesn’t have the difference-makers it once did.

23

Jacksonville Jaguars

How important is a coach? I’m guessing a lot. The Jaguars are a fun team if you add in major upgrades during the offseason.

22

Washington Commanders

The Commanders have an intriguing roster, but Carson Wentz’s presence is always going to bog down the ranking.

21

Pittsburgh Steelers

The defense is an elite unit. The head coach has an elite reputation. The weapons are top-notch. However, the offensive lines are a football disaster and the quarterback is not well-known.

20

Cleveland Browns

The Browns may remain at.500 without Deshaun Wilson for 11 games. However, it’s hard to see them moving higher than that.

19

Arizona Cardinals

Arizona’s offseason was full of drama and the roster only got worse. The Cardinals will contend for the playoffs, but it’s hard envisioning a Super Bowl contender.

18

Miami Dolphins

While some Dolphins fans may be a bit shocked at the ranking, we need to see Tua tagovailoa rise up and become the player many believed he was draft night.

17

Minnesota Vikings

Will Kirk Cousins improve under new head coach Kevin O’Connell? Will the defense make a major step forward? Minnesota has a lot to offer, but Minnesota still has a lot to prove.

16

New Orleans Saints

If Jameis Winston remains healthy and avoids interceptions the Saints may be a serious contender in the NFC. The rest of the roster excels in a variety of areas.

15

Tennessee Titans

Tennessee was the AFC’s top seed last year, and now? It might not be a playoff team. The AFC is loaded, the Titans’ offense is one-dimensional, and Ryan Tannehill is average.

14

Las Vegas Raiders

Las Vegas: What do you do? Although the Raiders are equipped with lite weaponry, Derek Carr is on track for a big year. However, the defense is brutal without the rush. AFC West is incredibly tough.

13

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts won 9 games last year, and Rodney McLeod, Stephon Gilmore, and Matt Ryan were added to the team. Indianapolis isn’t a top-tier contender, but the Colts should be a playoff team.

12

Philadelphia Eagles

Are the Cowboys or the Eagles the favourites in the NFC East, or both? Dallas might have a better quarterback than Philadelphia, and that could be a reason why they are considered the favorites in the NFC East.

11

Dallas Cowboys

Can the Cowboys lower penalties and overcome the losses of Randy Gregory, Amari Cooper, and Randy Gregory? It’ll take a great year from Dak Prescott.

10

Denver Broncos

Denver is the AFC’s biggest wild-card. Russell Wilson is an important upgrade, but are the defense’s skills slipping? Is this a tough division? What do you think of Nathaniel Hackett’s role as head coach?

9

San Francisco 49ers

And now for the NFC’s biggest wild-card. The Niners can be a Super Bowl contender if Trey Lance is great. They could be eliminated from the playoffs if he fails to perform.

8

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers have the best top-end talent of any team. Now comes the big question: Does the depth of the team provide enough talent? Will Los Angeles win the big games?

7

Baltimore Ravens

Don’t sleep on the Ravens. They’re loaded defensively and Lamar Jackson remains one of the league’s most dangerous quarterbacks.

6

Cincinnati Bengals

Don’t buy the regression argument. The Bengals have an extremely difficult schedule. They also have Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd.

5

Los Angeles Rams

The No. 5 defending champions 5? The Rams lost pieces this offseason, and while they’re terrific, they hit an inside strait to some degree in the postseason.

4

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs are going through a difficult offseason. This season could be a disaster considering their age. However, don’t count against Tom Brady and a talented roster.

3

Green Bay Packers

Davante Adams is a great player, but the Packers still possess Aaron Rodgers, an excellent coach, a loaded defense and incredibly strong infrastructure. They’ll be fine.

2

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs aren’t going anywhere. Patrick Mahomes has the league’s best offensive line, a plethora of weapons and a young, talented defense.

1

Buffalo Bills

The Super Bowl Favorites. It’s time to win a title in Buffalo. There is nothing better.
