Hadi Matar, 24, told the New York Post that he was shocked to hear that he had survived.

He also expressed dismay at the 75 year-old author who has been threatened with death over the years for his work on “The Satanic Verses,” which has been accused as blasphemy. He also stated that he wasn’t inspired by the fatwa issued in 1989 under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khameni, Iran’s former supreme Leader. Ayatollah is someone I respect. I consider him a great person. Matar said that this is all he will say about it. According to the Post, his lawyer advised him not to talk about the matter. Matar said in his first interview following the attack that he had only read “a few pages” of the controversial book. Matar said that he doesn’t like the man. “I don’t think that he’s very good,” he stated.

Rushdie was “someone who attacked Islam”, he said. Matar stated that Rushdie attacked Muslims’ beliefs and their belief systems. Rushdie, 75 years old, was attacked while attending an event at Western New York. According to his agent, he sustained a broken liver and severed nerves in one eye and an arm. His agent said that he was likely to lose his injured eye. While he is on ventilator, his condition is not improving. Matar was taken into custody immediately following the attack at the venue. He was then handed over to the police. Matar is being charged with attempted killing and assault. He has pleaded not guilt in court. He is scheduled to appear in court next Friday.

“Outside the whole of time”

Matar stated in the New York Post interview that he was also informed by Rushdie via a tweet earlier this season that he would be speaking at the Chautauqua Institution’s literary series. According to Matar, he said that he had taken a bus from Buffalo to get to the attack and then took a Lyft from Chautauqua to get there. Matar stated that he was just “hanging around” after the attack.

“Increasingly obsessed with Islam”

Matar’s mother Silvana Fardos, a Lebanese-born woman from Fairview, New Jersey, gave a interview to a British newspaper on Monday. In an interview, Matar was described as a “moody introvert” that became more obsessed with Islam after visiting Lebanon to meet his estranged father.
