Two-time major winner Watson joins LIV Golf

Bubba Watson, a former Masters winner, is currently recovering from a knee injury.

43-year old American will be returning to the series, which is controversially supported by Saudi Arabia, in September.

The former world number 2 will be an off course captain for the fourth event of the inaugural series at Boston.

Watson is now ranked 86 worldwide. He has 14 career wins, but has not played since May’s US PGA Championship.

Watson released a statement via social media, “I couldn’t make that move without acknowledging how grateful I am for the opportunities afforded me through the PGA Tour.”

LIV’s inaugural series has eight events. This weekend, the third will be in Bedminster New Jersey.

He said, “My meniscus rehabilitation continues, but I expect that I will be fully recovered before the 2023 season begins. I’m currently working on team plans.

“I look forward being a part in an exciting new concept of professional golf and to seeing how it evolves.”

The left-hander was also a participant in four Ryder Cup games for the USA.

As it stands now, US LIV Golf players won’t be eligible to play next year in the Ryder Cup as the PGA Tour suspended their members who joined the fledgling series.

Ryder Cup qualifying points for American players are earned through PGA Tour events.

Henrik Stenson from Sweden was last week removed as Europe’s captain for September 2023 Ryder Cup. He had joined LIV Golf.
