How Do You Know If Water Quality Is Bad?

We’re well into summer here on Long Island, which means we’re probably using more water than we use other times of the year. Whether it’s having to shower more often, watering the plants more, using more ice in our drinks, or just drinking more water… we can easily find ourselves at a faucet more often. Even when we aren’t trying to beat the heat, the average family uses an astonishing 300 gallons of water per day on average!

With water being such a critical part of our daily lives, it’s important to know the water you’re using is safe and of a certain quality. So what indicators are there to know your home has access to good quality water?

What Are Indicators Of Water Quality?

There are multiple indicators of water quality that must be measured to determine the safety of water. Regulations are in place in order to protect people as much as possible – but that doesn’t mean your tap water is safe to drink. Indicators of water safety issues include metals, pH, bacteria, and more.

Metals, for example, create toxicity in the water. Water with pH levels too far above or below 7 is harmful to us. Bacteria, such as E. Coli, can propagate and spread disease. It’s important to check these and other levels to make sure water quality is up to snuff. And it’s important to check periodically as water quality can change in areas over time.

What Water Quality Issues Does Long Island Have?

Long Island has a unique set of issues that affect its water quality. That’s because Long Island draws its water from an underground aquifer as opposed to water from up in the Catskills (like New York City).

As a result, chemicals that have seeped into the ground over the years have negatively impacted the water quality of Long Island. There have also been accidents and other events that have impacted the underground aquifer more so than others, including the Grumman plume.

What Is The Grumman Plume?

Over the years, Northrop Grumman – located in Bethpage – has been knowingly disposing of hazardous waste in a way that has contaminated Long Island’s only water source. While Grumman finalized a deal in the past year to work toward cleaning up the mess, that doesn’t help Long Island families right now that need clean water. That’s why whole-house water filtration has become increasingly popular on Long Island to keep families safe and to give them peace of mind.
