Can HVAC Trigger Asthma Attacks?

It is common folk wisdom that cold air is bad for asthma, but is that really true? Many commonly accepted truisms fall apart under scrutiny so let’s put that assertion to the test.

Does Cool Air Make Asthma Worse?

Colder air can be irritating to the airways… but when you combine that low temperature with low humidity, you run the risk of triggering an attack. In general, it seems to be cold coupled with dryness that is truly at the root of the issue.

The cold temperature can sometimes cause spasming in the airways – bringing on an attack. The dryness causes irritation and an increase in the production of phlegm which can also cause an asthma attack.

Can HVAC Cause Asthma?

Evaporation and refrigeration systems can increase the humidity levels in the home. While we noted earlier that higher humidity levels are better for asthmatics than dry air, it also opens the door for another problem: mold and mildew.

Higher humidity offers a better environment for mold and mildew to grow inside the ductwork. From there, contaminants can spread through the entire home. This is one of the more important reasons to have your ducts cleaned regularly.

In addition, HVAC systems usually do not mechanically introduce new air into the home. Instead, they move air. So, any contaminants that enter the home’s atmosphere remain circulating through the house.

Does Central Air Make Asthma Worse?

A corollary to the folk wisdom that we started with is the old advice that asthmatics should avoid air conditioning. Since HVAC systems usually reduce humidity, the dryness can cause irritation and possibly trigger an attack… so there is some truth to this. The overall picture is much more encouraging.

A properly maintained HVAC – especially one with top notch filtration – has been proven to reduce the amount of airborne pollutants. This reduction means fewer asthma triggers. So, in the final analysis, AC can make things better rather than worse.

What Is the Best AC Temperature for Asthma?

It’s not a single temperature but a range. The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (based on studies they’ve performed) recommend a room temperature between 68 and 71°F (20 to 21.6°C) with 30% to 50% humidity is best for asthmatics.
