This Search Engine Uses Profits to Plant Trees

Ecosia is a search engine that plants trees.

Did you know that you could help reforest the world simply by searching the web? That is the goal of a German-based Search Engine called Ecosia. When you use Ecosia to surf the internet rather than a traditional search engine, all proceeds go towards planting trees in deforested areas around the world. As of June 2019, they had planted 60 million trees! They even use renewable energy to power their business.

My Ecosia estimate. 180 searches = about 4 trees

According to the Ecosia info, it takes about 45 web searches to plant one tree. You can see in the upper right corner of the home page how many searches you have performed, and therefore estimate how many trees will be planted.

What could be easier than that? Just switch your search engine, plant trees and it costs you nothing! It’s a no-brainer. Plus which, besides working to fight land degradation, erosion, poverty and climate change through their reforestation efforts, Ecosia also protects the privacy of your searches, unlike most other search engines. They don’t sell or track your data and they anonymize all searches. Nice!

I used to have Google as the default home page on my laptop but now I have made Ecosia my new home page so it is the first thing I see anytime I open a new browser window. I have also downloaded the app onto my phone so that I can use it there as well.

How to Change Your Home Page in:

  • Google Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari
