Items You Can And Cannot Recycle

It’s great when individuals and organizations make a concerted effort to recycle. Recycling is a great way to keep our landfills from getting overloaded, protect our valuable air, water and soil, and it helps to preserve the Earth’s natural resources. However, it’s important to know what can and cannot be recycled so valuable materials aren’t getting thrown away.

Bay Disposal & Recycling offers convenient curbside pickup of residential recycling products and waste. Here is a list of what we currently accept from our residential clients:

  • Aluminum Cans
  • Catalogs
  • Envelopes
  • Magazines
  • Office paper
  • Phone books
  • Steel/tin cans
  • Wrapping paper
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Cereal boxes
  • Forms
  • Invoices
  • Newspapers
  • Paper bags
  • Plastic jugs
  • Unwanted mail
  • Writing paper
  • Cartons (milk, juice, soup, wine, etc.)

When recycling cartons, please empty them, rinse them out with water and recap them WITHOUT flattening the carton.

Okay, so here’s a list of things we don’t currently accept:

  • Styrofoam
  • Aerosol cans
  • Motor oil
  • Plastic bags
  • Yard waste
  • Diapers
  • Wood products
  • Paint cans

Here’s a handy guide [link: https://www.baydisposal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Recycle-Items-List-1.pdf] you can download and print to help you remember what’s recyclable and what’s not.

There are other recyclable materials that need specialized consideration. For example, electronics shouldn’t go in your trash or recycling bins, but they should go to a facility that will dismantle them and reuse the parts. Visit your municipality’s government website for information on recycling electronics.

Batteries and fluorescent light bulbs are also items that should not be thrown in the trash or recycling bins. Various municipalities in Hampton Roads have specialized collection stations to take care of these items. Please try to keep fluorescent bulbs intact (not broken) if possible.

Bay Disposal & Recycling is a locally owned and operated solid waste collection, disposal and recycling company.
