Electric car charging stations to outnumber service stations in the UK by 2020.

A report from Nissan proposes open Electric vehicles charging stations could dwarf the number of petrol stations in the UK by 2020.

Edward Jones, EV chief at Nissan UK, portrayed it as a tipping point for electric vehicles

“As electric vehicle sales take off, the charging infrastructure is keeping pace and paving the way for convenient all-electric driving. Combine that with constant improvements in our battery performance and we believe the tipping point for mass EV uptake is upon us. As with similar breakthrough technologies, the adoption of electric vehicles should follow an ‘S-curve’ of demand. A gradual uptake from early adopters accelerates to a groundswell of consumers buying electric vehicles just as they would any other powertrain.”

The study revealed that there were 8,472 conventional service stations in the UK. This figure is 75% less than the 37,539 recorded 40 years back. It is estimated that this steady decline is only going to continue with the emergence of electric cars.

There are currently 4,100 public electric vehicle charge point locations in the UK. However, this is forecasted to increase to 7,900 charge points– surpassing the number of service stations.
