Watching the coverage of the Putin victory this morning, I was taken back by how many stations were interpreting it as a sign of his popularity. I'm sure he's popular among many in Russia, but an election where other popular candidates are arrested or killed and outspoken reporters are killed on the street is hardly a referendum on anything.
