Installation Instructions For a USB Connected Printer For Windows Using a Print Driver (No Installer)

The print driver files must be added to the PC's operating system Driver Store before the printer can be connected with a USB cable for a successful Plug and Play Event. The recommended method is to use the Microsoft PnPUtil.exe utility to add the driver inf files to the Driver Store. Another method is to "add driver" via the Server Properties/Drivers Tab in the Devices and Printers folder- however this does not guarantee that all driver/printer features will be enabled/displayed until the PC is rebooted after the Plug and Play event.

NOTE! Do not connect the printer via the USB cable to the PC until after the print driver is been preloaded with the steps below:

Option 1 - PnPUtil.exe Method (Recommended)
  • From hp.com select the print driver (no installer) bundle and click download. Click Run or Save File. The file will be downloaded to a temporary folder on your PC.
  • Run the downloaded file to extract to the PC.
  • Make a note of the folder location in the self-extractor screen. This is where the files will be extracted.
  • Click Yes after noting the extraction location.
  • From an elevated "Admin" command prompt type "pnputil.exe -a" and include the path of where the extracted driver files are saved. Include in the command line argument "*.inf" that will preload all the print driver .inf files that are included in the driver bundle.
  • For example type"pnputil.exe -a HP_LaserJet_Pro_M501_Series\ *.inf" to preload all the printer .inf files. The actual file name for your printer will vary.
  • After the print driver .inf files have been successfully copied to the Driver Store, connect the USB cable from the printer to the PC. The print driver will install via the Plug and Play event.
Option 2 - Adding the Print Driver Files Via Server Properties/Drivers Tab/Add Printer Driver Wizard
  • Close any software programs running on your computer.
  • Turn on the printer.
  • Click on the Download button on this page.
NOTE: Depending on Operating System/browser version another window may open for the HP Download and Install Assistant when Download is selected.

Use this download assistant if unsure of how or where to download the printer driver. The HP Download and Install Assistant should automatically start the driver download when completed and display the location of where the driver files are downloaded.

If the Download and Install Assistant is not available for the download selected, or is not used, follow the steps below:
  • Click Run or Save File. The file will be downloaded to a temporary folder on your PC.
  • Run the downloaded file.
  • Make a note of the folder location in the self-extractor screen. This is where the files will be extracted.
  • Click Yes after noting the extraction location.
  • Go to Control Panel, and View Devices and Printers.
  • Click on any device in the Devices and Printers list and Print Server Properties button will be seen at the top of the screen.
  • Click on Print Server Properties button and click on the Drivers Tab.
  • Click on the Add… button.
  • Follow the prompts in the Add Printer Driver Wizard until you reach the screen that shows the printer manufacturer list.
  • Click Have Disk.
  • Browse to the folder where the files were downloaded and extracted in step 6.
  • Select the appropriate INF file.
  • Click Open, and then click OK .
  • Select the appropriate printer. This will add the print driver into the Printer Server Properties.
  • Connect the USB cable from the printer to the PC and let Windows Plug and Play the print driver.
Fixes
  • Original software and drivers.
