On Unintended Consequences and Resolving the Tensions Surrounding Cannabis

A significant amount of prohibitions Unintended Consequences are born on those who have nothing to do with Cannabis and other drugs. Though too, it should be noted that the greater part of the cannabis supply network is invisible and largely conducted benignly. What other business is consensually conducted without advertising and other impost, that turns over about a billion dollars a year, requires little to no management, security or energy, generates miniscule pollution and there is not a lawyer, accountant, banker or OSH official in sight. Consider the prevalence of use, where our very own gold standard longitudinal study of some 35 yrs (Christchurch Health and Development Study) identified that 4 out of 5 of our surveyed community had tried cannabis more than five times. (read: law in disrepute), now consider who they are.... they are our neighbours, they are our family, our parents, children, uncles and aunts; they are our friends, they are who we do business with, they are who we obtain professional services from and they are who we sleep with. They could even be us!Imagine all of them with criminal convictions, as the LAW intended. Who would that serve?We must deconstruct the hyperbole and fifty years of potaganda and see it for what it is: Cannabis law reform is a neighbourhood issue. It is about us.
