The national carrier of India the Air India on Friday lifted the flying ban on Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad after the Civil Aviation Ministry directed the AI to revoke the restriction and now the private airlines, who were waiting for the AI's decision, will also follow the same.
WHY AI BANNED FROM FLYING?
It was an incident that compel the AI to imposed ban on the member of parliament. The incident that sparked stir in the country took place on the 23rd March when the Gaikwad, travelling from Pune to Delhi on Air India flight, engaged into an argument with the AI staff after the flight landed at Delhi Airport.
The MP had claimed that he booked a business class ticket but the AI did not inform him at the time of booking that there is no any business class seats in the flight. The argument with the AI staff soon turned violent when the Gaikwad started hitting a 60 year old AI staff, SuKumar, with his slippers.
The incident sparked uproar after when it came out in the news and even the news received prime-time coverage on the news channels. The Air India then registered police complaints against the MP on the same day evening, the MP in the interviews to the media even said that he hitted 25 times with his slipper to the AI staff.
The next day on 24th March, the national carrier first announce that the airline will not allow Gaikwad to fly with the Air India. After the AI the private airlines also banned the MP from flying on their flight.
Ravindra Gaikwad tried to book return ticket many times even the ban imposed on him, but the AI and private airlines canceled their returned ticket.
And the Gaikwad finally returned Pune by train...
RUCKUS IN PARLIAMENT
The Shiv Sena raised a hue and cry in the Parliament over the flying ban imposed on Ravindra Gaikwad. The party argued that the flying ban imposed on their MP is unfair. The Sena leaders disrupted the proceedings in the Lok Sabha and due to this the proceedings of house has been adjourned many times by the Speaker. The Ravindra Gaikwad himself speaks in the Parliament.
Here brief of what he had said:
- The false information is being spread against me, the AI offcial firstly shouted at me.
- I was assaulted first because of that I pushed the AI staff. I am a victim of injustice
- The action should be taken against all who favoured the flying ban.
- If I have caused any hurt, I apologise to the Parliament, but not the Air India official.
- Without investigation how an MP barred from flying, this is a shameful and unfortunate.
Around the dozen of Sena member sourrounded the civil aviation minister and some of them even threatened the minister to stop flights in Mumbai and will also skip the dinner hosted by the PM Modi on the Monday if the flying ban not lifted. There was trenmendous pressure on the BJP from its ally Shiv Sena, who is providing curcial support to the government in Maharashtra, to lift the flying ban on Gaikwad.
REVOKING FLYING BAN
A series of closed-door meetings, that involve Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Shiv Sena's Anant Geete and the aviation minister Gajapathi Raju, indicated that the govt is expected to step in to lift the ban on the Sena MP.
But the civil aviation ministry was saying that he did not want to take any step in a hurry. The Gaikwad in the evening sent a letter to the Speaker which was forwarded to the aviation ministry in which he has mentioned that the “incident may kindly not be seen as a reason for likely recurrence of such an event in future also”. and Gaikwad also expressed regret over the incident.
The matter will be discussed with the Prime Minister's Office and Air India CMD, a ministry sources said, reports in the media.
