Importance of ‘Republic’
The 'Republic' has been taken from 'Res Respublica', a Latin word that means 'A state, in which the people and their elected representatives have the supreme power, and which has an elected president rather than a monarch'.

Because of the people's have supreme power, India is the largest sovereign nation in the world. In the republican system where the people become the true rules of the state by electing their representatives through direct voting. The system which India have in place from the Panchayat to the Parliament is the Republic System.

But we can't understand the significance of Republic Day without taking a look into the history.

History of Repubic of India
While the India gets freedom from the British colonisation on the 15th August, 1947 but its established itself as a sovereign state on 26th January, 1950, on this day the constitution of India came into being, 67 years ago from 26th January, 2017.

The British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act on 5th July 1947 and it had received the royal assent on 18th July 1947. This act, partitioned the British India into two independdent dominions of India and Pakistan and demarcated by the midnight of 14-15 August, 1947.

On 29 August 1947, under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a drafting committee had been set up by the Constituent Assembly to prepare a draft constitution for India. Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, who later known as the chief architect of the Constitution.

The first draft of the constitution had been submitted to constituent assembly in November 1947 and two years later on the 26th January, 1950 the constituent assembly finally adopted the Constitution of India.

The date 26th January, 1950 was marked as the 'Purna Swaraj' or the day the India would attain the complete freedom from its British rule. The drafting committee member felt that the birth of the constitution should be observed on a day that held some importance in their fight for the independence. When India has got freedom from British rule in 15th August,1947 and not on 26th January, this date even then was assigned to celebrate Republic Day of India

This was the day when Indian Independence Act was completely repealed and Indian constitution came into being that finally established India as a democratic republic.
