As per media report, more than 40 people were on board when the Boat capsized at NIT ghat in Patna, Bihar. After the incident the Chief Minister has ordered a probe.
The incident happened when a boat was returning from Kite Flying Festival that was organised in the middle of the river on occassion of Makar Sankranti celebration. The incident took place at around 6 p.m when it had turned dark.
Most of the passengers were able to swim to safety and reached the shore, but at least six people are still said to be missing. The NDRF and SDRF team have launched a major rescue operation in the river to trace the missing people.
According sources, it was a small boat that was overloaded with people, which led to its capsizing. The boat was about to reach the bank of the river when the incident happened.
Sanjay Agarwal, Patna district magistrate and district police officials are camping at the incident site.
The Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief and asked the officials to fasten the rescue operations. He also called and requested Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to cancel the Mahatma Gandhi Setu rehabilitation foundation stone laying program which was scheduled to be held on Sunday.
The Bihar government has announced a compensation of Rs.4 lakh to the kin of the victims soon after the incident.
