Taking an initiative, to reduce the drink driving and road accidents, that claim thousands of lives every year, the Supreme Court on Thursday banned the sale of Liquor along both national and state highways within 500 metres. The court said the licence of existing shops can't be renewed next year after 31st March 2017.
Headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur, a three judge bench ordered the removal of signboards, advertisements, signage about availability of liquor shops on national and state highways, the roads must be absolutely free from any type of distraction or attractions so that there could be clear visibility.
The court had made it clear last week that there is necessity of an order on liquor sale for the safety and security of highways commuters who get tempted for a few drinks when they see an liquor shops on the highways.
The country top court also expressed deep concern and said that the states are not paying heed to the advice of center not to give licence to sell liquor on highways.
The bench said, you can deliver the liquor door to door, to the councel of Jammu and Kashmir, who said the people will have to face difficulties in accessing the shops, if the shops are keep away from the highways.
The center had asked for the removal of these venders along highways in 2007, but the Union Terrority still didn't take any action.
There are 62 liquor shops along 1km stretch on the national highway in Mahe district, Puducherry. Only Ghaziabad of Uttar Pradesh has 502 liquor shops, mostly close to NH24, NH91, NH58 and state highway 57.
A Shromani Akali Dal legislator, Deep Malhotra who also run liquor business has welcome the decision and said that so many accidents happen due to drink driving across the state.
The Haryana government had already removed liquor vends and shops from highways in 2014, following a Punjab and Haryana high court order.
