In India it has become a tradition to called their leaders with different name given by their supporters, starting from Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru to Mayavati, Mamata Banerjee and Jayalalithaa they all known by a different name given by the people, different to their real official names on paper.

Like in present times, Mayawati is known as Behenji while Mamata is called by Didi for her supporters, both the word meaning sister.

It is only Jayalalithaa, who is famous as Amma - the mother.

A Brief Biography of Jayalalithaa

Jayalalithaa had born on 24th February 1948 at Melukote, Mandya district, then in Mysore State (now Karnataka) to Jayaram and Vedavalli in a Tamil Brahmin (Iyengar) family. Jayalalitha was given her grandmother's name Koamalavalli at the time of birth.

The Jayalalithaa was nicknamed Ammu as a child. Her father had died when she was only two years old. After her father death, her mother started working in the film, and told Jayalalithaa to live in Bangalore with grandparents, to sustain the family. She continued her studies in Bangalore while her mother was living in Chennai for her work.

During her studied, she received severals medals being a bright student, Jayalalithaa wanted to be a lawyer while she was growing up. She was not keen to act in films but her mother had forced to find her career in the film industry. Jayalalithaa had acted in more than 100 films and also worked with actor a charismatic actor and politician MG Ramachandrana.

In 1982, her political mentor and the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.G. Ramachandran inducted her in to the ruling All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or AIADMK, Jayalalithaa finally entered active politics. In 1983 she was appointed as a member of a high power committee which was looking after implementation of noon meal scheme for school children.

MGR started promoting Jayalalithaa's political career through rallies and public gathering, appealing to the people that they [MGR and Jaya] had worked together in several Tamil films as hero and heroine.

Following the death of MGR, the political analysts may have written her off but she proved them wrong and how! When she had been pushed out of funeral carriage of MGR by the nephew of his wife Janaki and later she faced insult by their family members also, after that she vowed a political comeback that no one would have taken seriously.

During a ruckus in 1989, a scuffle had taken place between DMK and AIADMK supporters in Tamil Nadu assembly. When Karunanidhi was the chief minister while Jayalalithaa was in the opposition. A leader of AIADMK had snatched the budget papers from Karunanidhi's hands, and torn it, while pushed the then CM Karunanidhi, who later fell on the ground.

To take the avenge of humiliation of Karunanidhi, a DMK supporter had pulled Jayalalithaa's saree while she was going out of the state assembly. Later she fell on the ground and vowed that until it is safe for women she would not return to the assembly.

After this incident she was called 'Puratchi Thalaivi', it means the rebel leader for her aggressive politics. Her journey from 'Puratchi Thalaivi' to 'Amma' actually began, when Jayalalithaa had sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1991.

The Tamil Nadu was facing the problem of female foeticide and infanticide, when Jayalalithaa had become the CM. To root out the problem, Jayalalithaa launched 'The Cradle Baby Scheme' in 1992 to root out this major problem. Which was appreciated worldwide as a highly successful initiative.

The thousands of girls had been saved across Tamil Nadu after the initiative taken by Jayalalithaa. The Cradle Baby Scheme also established an emotional relationship between Jayalalithaa and the people of Tamil Nadu. She was now called as Amma by her supporters in Taiml Nadu.

She had proved herself as a most powerfull and very strong leader in the people's hearts than even MGR had done and became ‘Puratchi Thalaivi Amma’ to her people. Later after 2011 she launched a series of pro-poor schemes sending a message that she was here for the people's welfare like a mother.

Later brands like Amma Canteens, Amma Salt, Amma Pharmacy, Amma Cement, Amma drinking water, Amma Marriage Halls were launched for people from economically weaker sections. Jayalalithaa finally established herself as Amma in Tamil Nadu through her persona and deeds as the chief minister.
