Harriet Miers on Roe V. Wade

An interesting story was published in today's Wall Street Journal in the opinion section regarding Harriet Miers and Roe V. Wade. According to the article when Harriet Miers nomination was first announced by the White House a prominent Christian leader James Dobson had reportedly been told by Karl Rove that Harriet Miers will vote against Roe V. Wade. However it appears this was not the case, Karl Rove did not tell him this but perhaps others had.

After Harriet Miers was nominated there was a conference call meeting of Christian conservatives, two of which were reported close friends of Harriet Miers and both active judges. Reporter John Fund of the Wall Street Journal has obtained extensive notes of this conference call and has dropped what may be a bombshell of news. According to these notes at one point in the call when Ms. Miers personal friends were asked if she would overturn Roe V. Wade their responses were "absolutely" and "I agree with that."

Needless to say this has raised many concerns at Capitol Hill today with men like Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) saying if this is true they may request a subpeona of Dobson during the nomination process in order to shed light on this issue. Many conservative congressmen are also feeling the pressure of this new information. If it is true with many of them, already feeling the repercussions of this nomination from their conservative base, will be much more reluctant to resort to the 'nuclear option' if the Democrats attempt a fillibuster.

In other rumor news for the day there was an intersting piece of newson a popular blog "confirm them" detailing an report, although unsubstantiated but from solid sources, that reportedly says that a movement is forming among Republican senators for Miers to be withdrawn. However Behind the Bench reminds readers to take all these rumors with a grain of salt, you never know if Miers friends may have been talking about things they knew nothing about or if this report is actually completely wrong.
