NYC New Mayor Picks LI Chief Of Detectives As NYPD's First Woman Commissioner

After reports, that New York City Mayor-Elect, Eric Adams (D), might tap Law Enforcement Officials from as far away as Washington, he has reportedly choose the Next NYPD Commissioner from in New York State.

Adams has chosen Nassau County Chief of Detectives, Keechant Sewell, to become the First Woman Commissioner of the NYPD. “I’m very humbled to even be considered for this and it’s an extraordinary opportunity. And I take it very seriously,” Sewell said.

The 49-year-old was reportedly a “gut choice” for Adams, and had considered her for months.

Sewell took the Post of Chief of Detectives last year, but has been in Law Enforcement for over 20 years. She was the First Black Woman to be Chief of Detectives in Nassau County.

Adams, who was an NYPD Member himself, was reportedly considering ex-Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best, or Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw, last week, but sources said that this Decision wasn’t Final.

In an Interview, Shea was excited for whoever his Successor would be, saying, “I’m incredibly optimistic, envious in some ways of who's coming in because they're in for the ride of their life."

Sewell, who is from Queens, will be the Third Black NYPD Commissioner, following after Benjamin Ward in the 1980s and Lee Brown in the early 1990s.

Sewell will take the Place of Dermot Shea, who served with the Department for 30 years and as Commissioner for Two. He will Depart at the End of the year, just as Adams takes Office.

She’s set to take the Lead of the NYPD as Crime has risen in many Categories as of late, including Robberies and Shooting incidents. She told the Post that Violent Crime is her Top Priority.

According to the Report, part of Sewell’s Interview Process, included a Mock Press Conference about the Shooting of an Unarmed Black Man by a White Officer.

An Official Announcement of Adams’ Choice is expected to come Wednesday, at Long Island City’s Queensbridge Houses, where she lived as a Kid.

Retiring NYPD Chief of Department, Rodney Harrison, is Heading East, to Lead Suffolk County Police Department.
