House Bill To Regulate Tax Preparers

A House Bill to Regulate Unenrolled Tax Preparers has the backing of Influential Groups. A pair of Lawmakers introduced, Bipartisan Legislation, to Regulate Tax Preparers, in the latest effort to, ferret out, Unqualified Preparers.

Rep. Jimmy Panetta, (D-CA, 20th District), and Tom Rice (R-SC, 7th District), introduced the Taxpayer Protection and Preparer Proficiency Act (.H.R 4148).

The House Proposal would Reinstate IRS's Registered Tax Preparer Program by requiring Unenrolled Preparers to: Complete a Background Check, Competency Test, and Annual continuing Education Courses.

It would also give th Service Authority to Recind Preparer Tax ID Numbers of Fraudulent or Incompetent Preparers.

The American Instutute of CPAs,the National Association of Enrolled Agents and H&R Block, amoung others, have joined forces in Support of the Proposel.

Don't expect smooth sailing. Powerful Free-Market Groups Oppose the Bill.

About Two-Thirds of Preparers of Individual Returns are Unerolled Preparrs, generally those who aren't CPAs, enrolled Agents or Attorneys.
