UT Independent Voting Update

Currently in Utah, Parties decide who may Vote in their Primaries. Registered Democrats and Independent Voters may Vote in the Democratic Primary. Only Registered Republicans can Vote in the Republican Primary.

Some Utah Republicans claim that Democratic Voters have been Raiding their Primaries. It turns out to be a False Claim, as the Electoral Innovation Lab at Princeton discovered.

What happened, State’s Registration Rules Changed, it now allowed Independent Voters to Participate in the Republican Primary Election that matter in Utah.

Legislators ignored the Facts, when the Utah Senate gave the Final Stamp-of-Approval to a Bill, HB197, Limiting when Voters can Change their Party Affiliation.

If Signed by Governor, Spencer J. Cox (R), HB197 would Prevent Voters from Switching Parties for nearly Three Months ahead of a Primary Election. It’s another Example of Party Insiders “Fixing” a Problem that doesn’t Exist and Disenfranchising American Voters in the Process.

There was a last Second update to Utah's HB197 that was quietly added before it Passed that Exempts Independent Voters who Register into a Party from the Bill's Coverage.

The Bill now only Applies to Voters Registered with a Party from Switching to another Party before the Primary.

It remains an Undemocratic Piece of Legislation but its effect is Diminished and we can directly Credit the Electoral Innovation Lab at Princeton's Report and the Work of Open Primaries to Change the Narrative in Utah for that, an important Step towards Protecting the Rights of Independent Voters and building Nonpartisan Reform in Utah.
